After Mommy took the candles off the birthday cake, she gave a piece of the cake to everyone in the room. All the children ate their cake quickly. After Pat’s cousins ate their first piece of cake, they asked Lee if he could bring them another piece.

Pat’s cousins ate a lot of cake, but who do you think ate even more than they did? Tom, of course! Tom ate even more cake than Pat’s cousins. Tom ate the first piece of cake Lee gave him. Then he asked Lee to bring him another piece of cake.

Then, Tom ate that piece, gave his plate back to Lee and asked him to bring him another piece of cake. Lee gave him another piece of cake and of course Tom ate that piece, too. Then, Tom ate even one more piece of cake. Tom ate four pieces of cake!

After the children finished eating the birthday cake, they all wanted to go and watch Pat open her birthday presents. All the children looked at Pat while she was taking the paper off her present. Pat had lots of presents so, of course, she was very excited.

Of course, not all the presents were big. Some of them were quite small. Some of the presents just had candy in them. Other presents were much bigger and more expensive.

One of the presents was a big book. It was a big picture book all about parrots. That present was from Pat’s grandmother and grandfather. Pat was really pleased with that book, and she took it to show Mommy. Pat thinks that book will help her to look after her pet parrot.

Of course, that was not the only book Pat got as a birthday present. There were lots of other books, too. One of the other books was about rabbits. Do you think that book had pictures in it, too? Of course it did.

That book had pictures of all kinds of rabbits. Some of the rabbits in the pictures were small, and some of them were much bigger. One of the pictures was really big, and all of the pictures were in color.

There were more than seventeen or eighteen children in the living room, so of course it was very noisy. All the children were very excited to see Pat open all her presents. Mommy asked the children to try to not be so noisy.

Mommy wanted all the children to be quieter. She told the children that Pat’s grandmother has a headache. She told them that if they are quieter, Pat’s grandmother will come back into the living room.

Mommy wants Grandmother to come back so she can see the present Mommy and Daddy are going to give Pat. That present is very big. It is really big! It is much bigger than all the other presents. All the children are very excited to learn what that present will be.

Pat and Lee are speaking about the big present.

Pat

Lee! Tell your friends not to be so noisy! They are all very noisy, and some of them are being naughty, too!

Lee

All right, I’ll go and speak to them. I don’t want Mommy to be angry.

Pat

Good. My friends are not noisy or naughty. It’s just your friends! If they can be quiet now, Mommy and Daddy will bring in my birthday present.

Lee

Oh, your birthday present. I already know what your birthday present is.

Pat

Do you? Is it good? Will I like it?

Lee

It’s not bad.

Pat

Was it expensive?

Lee

Of course it was expensive. Mommy and Daddy always buy you expensive presents.

Pat

They buy expensive presents for you, too.

Lee

No, they don’t. My presents are always smaller than your presents. Your presents are always bigger and more expensive than my presents.

Pat

Oh, Lee! You’re just angry because it’s my birthday today. You want it to be your birthday. You always want to have what I have.

Lee

No, I don’t.

Pat

Yes, you do.

Lee

No, I don’t. I don’t want your book about parrots.

Pat

Why not?

Lee

Because I’m not interested in parrots. I don’t want a book about pet parrots. I want a book about rats. I think pet rats are much more interesting than pet parrots.

Pat

Oh, Lee! Rats would make very bad pets! Nobody wants to have rats as pets!

Lee

Well, I do. Tell me Pat – what did you wish for while you were blowing out the candles? Can you tell me?

Pat

Of course I can’t. Nobody tells people what they wish for when they blow out the candles on their birthday cake.

Lee

That’s all right. I know already. I could see by the way you looked. I could see what you were wishing for.

Pat

No you couldn’t. You’re just pretending.

Lee

No, I’m not.

Pat

Yes, you are. You always like to pretend you know things you don’t. You just pretend – you don’t really know. And you don’t know what my birthday present is. You’re just pretending again.
