This morning, all the children are in the classroom. They are sitting quietly and listening to their teacher. The teacher is telling them what they will do today.
First, the teacher told the children to sit down. Then, she asked them to stop talking and be quiet. She said, “Please be quiet. Good! Now, I hope everybody is listening to me.”
The children had to be quiet because the teacher wanted to tell them about a song she wants them to sing. This is the song people sing when it is someone’s birthday.
Lee is listening to the teacher very carefully. He wants to learn how to sing this song. He wants to learn how to sing this song because this week it is his sister’s birthday.
Tom is listening carefully, too. He wants to learn the birthday song so he can sing it to Pat on Wednesday. He will sing it with the other children before they give Pat their presents.
This song is not so difficult to learn. It is very easy so the children can learn it quickly. There are not many words in the song, and it is very easy to sing. The song is called, ‘Happy Birthday’, and it goes like this:
Happy birthday to you,祝你生日快樂
Happy birthday to you,祝你生日快樂
Happy birthday, happy birthday,
Happy birthday to you.
Now, all the children in Lee and Tom’s class can sing the birthday song. What about you? Can you sing the birthday song? It’s very easy, isn’t it? Why not sing it next time someone in your family has a birthday? They will be very happy to hear you sing this song to them.

Tom and Lee are talking about the birthday song.
Tom
I like that song. It’s really easy to sing.
Lee
Yes it is, isn’t it? We can sing it every time someone has a birthday.
Tom
We can sing it to Pat on Wednesday. We can sing it before we give her our presents.
Lee
That’s right. I bought a really nice present to give her. I hope she likes it.
Tom
What is it? Did you spend a lot of money? What did you buy her?
Lee
I’m not going to tell you. If I tell you, you’ll tell Pat. You’ll have to wait until Wednesday. You’ll see it then.
Tom
Oh, well then I won’t tell you what I’m going to buy for her.
Lee
That’s okay. I don’t want to know. I’m only interested in the present I have for her.
Tom
Go on! Tell me! What is it? What present did you buy for Pat?
Lee
No. I told you – I’m not going to tell you what it is. You’ll just have to wait until Wednesday. You’ll see it then.
Tom
Well, I think I know what it is. I think I know what you bought her.
Lee
No, you don’t. How do you know?
Tom
Someone told me.
Lee
No, they didn’t. Nobody knows what it is. Nobody knows what I bought her.
Tom
Yes, they do. Everybody in our class knows.
Lee
No, they don’t. If you already know what it is, why did you ask me?
Tom
I wanted to see if what someone told me was right or not.
Lee
You don’t know. Nobody knows!
Tom
Yes, we do! We all know. Now, be quiet – the teacher’s coming.
Lee
All right. But you don’t know what I bought for Pat. Nobody knows!
