幸虧, xìngkuī, (Adv), fortunately

 

Function The adverb 幸虧 introduces a situation that invalidates the possible negative effect of the previous clause. 要不然yàobùrán or 才cái often follows.

1 這幾天天天下雨。幸虧我買了除濕機,要不然衣服都發霉了。

Zhè jǐ tiān tiāntiān xiàyǔ. Xìngkuī wǒ mǎile chúshījī, yàobùrán yīfú dōu fāméi le.

It has been raining every day over the last few days. Luckily, I bought a dehumidifier; otherwise, my clothes would all mildew.

2 我弄丟了報告。幸虧朋友撿到了,才不用再寫一次。

Wǒ nòngdiūle bàogào. Xìngkuī péngyǒu jiǎndào le, cái búyòng zài xiě yí cì.

I lost my report. Fortunately, a friend picked it up (found it), so I don’t have to rewrite it.

3 他爸爸常說幸虧這幾年生意還可以,才有錢付他的學費。

Tā bàba cháng shuō xìngkuī zhè jǐ nián shēngyì hái kěyǐ, cái yǒu qián fù tā de xuéfèi.

His dad often says it’s a good thing business has been OK in recent years, that’s why he has the money to pay his tuition.

4 幸虧我一到車站,公車就來了,才沒有遲到。

Xìngkuī wǒ yí dào chēzhàn, gōngchē jiù lái le, cái méi yǒu chídào.

Luckily, the bus arrived just as I got to the bus stop, so I wasn’t late.

5 幸虧他有實際的經驗,才能這麼快地找到工作。

Xìngkuī tā yǒu shíjì de jīngyàn, cái néng zhème kuài de zhǎodào gōngzuò.

Fortunately, he has real-life experience; that is why he found a job so quickly.
