Function This pattern adds special properties to either the subject or object of a sentence.

1 像小籠包、炸雞排、擔仔麵這樣的小吃，他都喜歡。

Xiàng xiǎolóngbāo, zhájīpái, dànzǎimiàn zhèyàng de xiǎochī, tā dōu xǐhuān.

He likes all kinds of light snacks, like steamed dumplings, fried chicken fillet, and danzai noodles.

2 像你這樣喜歡古蹟的人，一定要去台南看看。

Xiàng nǐ zhèyàng xǐhuān gǔjī de rén, yídìng yào qù Táinán kànkàn.

A person like you who likes historical sites really must go check out Tainan.

3 像她那樣有語言天分的人，一定能很快地學好中文。

Xiàng tā nàyàng yǒu yǔyán tiānfèn de rén, yídìng néng hěn kuài de xuéhǎo Zhōngwén.

A person talented in languages like her will most certainly learn Chinese quickly.

4 像他這樣友善對待土地的小農越來越多。

Xiàng tā zhèyàng yǒushàn duìdài tǔdì de xiǎonóng yuèláiyuè duō.

Small farmers like him who work the land in an environmentally conscious way are increasing in number.

5 像她這樣在農村長大的人都喜歡接近自然。

Xiàng tā zhèyàng zài nóngcūn zhǎngdà de rén dōu xǐhuān jiējìn zìrán.

People who, like her, grew up in a farming village all like to be close to nature.

 

Usage This pattern is not related to 像…一樣, which compares two nouns, e.g., 他在鄉下買了一片田。每天吃的都是自己種的新鮮蔬菜。我羨慕他，希望能像他一樣。 Tā zài xiāngxià mǎile yí piàn tián. Měi tiān chī de dōu shì zìjǐ zhòng de xīnxiān shūcài. Wǒ xiànmù tā, xīwàng néng xiàng tā yíyàng. ‘He bought a piece of farmland in the country and now his meals consist of the fresh vegetables he planted himself. I admire him. I wish I could do that.’
