▎上, shàng, (V), Various Meanings of the Verb (1)

 

Function The verb 上 has various meanings, the most typical of which indicates an upward movement. Atypical cases will have to be learned as such. No general rules apply.

1 春天的時候，很多人上陽明山泡溫泉、欣賞櫻花。

Chūntiān de shíhòu, hěn duō rén shàng Yángmíng shān pào wēnquán, xīnshǎng yīnghuā.

In the spring, many people go up Yangming Mountain to soak in the hot springs and enjoy the cherry blossoms.

2 下課以後，我要上樓去找同學討論功課。

Xiàkè yǐhòu, wǒ yào shàng lóu qù zhǎo tóngxué tǎolùn gōngkè.

After class, I’m going upstairs to discuss homework with classmates.

3 車子來了。快上車吧！

Chēzi láile. Kuài shàng chē ba!

The bus is here. Hurry up and get on.

4 早點睡吧。明天 6 點要上飛機呢。

Zǎodiǎn shuì ba. Míngtiān liùdiǎn yào shàng fēijī ne.

Get to sleep a little earlier. You have to board the plane at 6:00 am tomorrow.

5 他習慣週末上超市買菜。

Tā xíguàn zhōumò shàng chāoshì mǎi cài.

He usually goes to the supermarket on the weekend to buy groceries.

6 為了身體健康，晚上最好 11 點以前上床。

Wèile shēntǐ jiànkāng, wǎnshàng zuìhǎo shíyīdiǎn yǐqián shàng chuáng.

For your health, it’s best to get to bed before 11:00 pm.

7 上班時間，捷運上人很多，擠死了。

Shàngbān shíjiān, jiéyùn shàng rén hěn duō, jǐ sǐle.

When going to work, there are lots of people on the MRT. It’s really crowded.

8 他每星期六都上教堂。

Tā měi xīngqíliù dōu shàng jiàotáng.

He goes to church every Saturday.

9 台北 101 跨年放煙火活動，昨天晚上上電視新聞了。

Táiběi 101 kuànián fàng yānhuǒ huódòng, zuótiān wǎnshàng shàng diànshì xīnwén le.

The Taipei 101 New Year’s fireworks display was on the news last night.
