難得, nándé, (Adv), rarely

 

Function 難得 is an adverb, indicating the speaker’s observation that such an instance is not commonly experienced.

1 他給自己很大的壓力。難得看到他輕鬆的樣子。

Tā gěi zìjǐ hěn dà de yālì. Nándé kàndào tā qīngsōng de yàngzi.

He is always putting so much pressure on himself, and it’s rare to see him relaxed.

2 我難得來這附近的商業廣場。沒想到這裡這麼熱鬧。

Wǒ nándé lái zhè fùjìn de shāngyè guǎngchǎng. Méi xiǎngdào zhèlǐ zhème rènào.

I don’t often come to this shopping district. I had no idea how bustling it is.

3 你們難得聽古典音樂吧?覺得怎麼樣?喜歡嗎?

Nǐmen nándé tīng gǔdiǎn yīnyuè ba? Juéde zěnmeyàng? Xǐhuān ma?

You don’t often listen to classical music, do you? What do you think? Do you like it?

4 他的想法總是很正面,難得有負面的想法。

Tā de xiǎngfǎ zǒngshì hěn zhèngmiàn, nándé yǒu fùmiàn de xiǎngfǎ.

He’s a very positive person, and it’s rare that he is ever negative.

5 我難得看到他焦慮不安的樣子。發生了什麼事?

Wǒ nándé kàndào tā jiāolǜ bù'ān de yàngzi. Fāshēngle shénme shì?

I rarely see him anxious like this. What happened?

 

Usage 難得 can also be a state verb modified by 很 or 真, e.g.,

真難得,那麼年輕就自食其力,不靠父母了。

Zhēn nándé, nàme niánqīng jiù zìshí qílì, bú kào fùmǔ le.

Now that’s something you don’t see every day. So young and standing on his own two feet and not relying on his parents.
