▎免得, miǎnde, (Adv), lest, so as to avoid

 

Function Advice is offered to avoid the occurrence of something undesirable. If what comes before 免得 is properly carried out, what comes after 免得 can be avoided.

1 你又咳嗽又發燒。快去看醫生吧，免得感冒越來越嚴重。

Nǐ yòu késòu yòu fāshāo, kuài qù kàn yīshēng ba, miǎnde gǎnmào yuèláiyuè yánzhòng.

You’ve got a cough and also a fever. You’d better go to a doctor right away, so that your cold will not get worse.

你有空的話去幫一下忙，免得他一個人忙不過來。

Nǐ yǒu kòng de huà qù bāng yíxià máng, miǎnde tā yí ge rén mángbúgúòlái.

Give him a hand if you have a spare minute, otherwise he won’t be able to handle it all by himself.

3 我們最好注意一下食材的產地，免得買到有問題的食品。

Wǒmen zuìhǎo zhùyì yíxià shícái de chǎndì, miǎnde mǎi dào yǒu wèntí de shípǐn.

We should keep an eye on where our food is produced so as to avoid buying anything suspect.

4 我建議你多去參加一些社交活動，免得你一個人在家無聊。

Wǒ jiànyì nǐ duō qù cānjiā yìxiē shèjiāo huódòng, miǎnde nǐ yí ge rén zài jiā wúliáo.

You should go to more social functions, lest you grow bored at home.

5 好好準備吧，免得口頭報告時太緊張而忘了要說什麼。

Hǎohǎo zhǔnbèi ba, miǎnde kǒutóu bàogào shí tài jǐnzhāng ér wàngle yào shuō shénme.

Be well prepared so that during your oral presentation you might avoid forgetting what to say because of nervousness.
