來, lái, as a verb complement, to get along well, to be able to relate to each other well (2)

 

Function When 來 is used as a non-directional complement, it conveys rapport, with V 得來 expressing good rapport and V 不來 the contrary.

1 他跟網友才見了一次面就覺得兩人很合得來,還約了下次一起去看電影。

Tā gēn wǎngyǒu cái jiànle yí cì miàn jiù juéde liǎng rén hěn hédelái, hái yuēle xià cì yìqǐ qù kàn diànyǐng.

He only met his online friend once but thought they got along famously. He even arranged for them to meet a second time at the movies.

2 我想我跟不愛乾淨的人一定合不來。

Wǒ xiǎng wǒ gēn bú ài gānjìng de rén yídìng hébùlái.

I don’t think I would get along with someone who is messy.

3 他們很聊得來,尤其是一聊到吉他就聊個沒完。

Tāmen hěn liáodelái, yóuqí shì yì liáodào jítā jiù liáo ge méi wán.

They really hit it off, and once they got onto guitars they talked forever.

4 跟談不來的人說話,就連說一句話也嫌多。

Gēn tánbùlái de rén shuōhuà, jiù lián shuō yí jù huà yě xián duō.

It’s hard talking to someone with whom you just don’t click. Even a single sentence can feel like a lot of work.

5 別打擾他,他難得跟別人聊得來。你等一下再來找他吧。

Bié dǎrǎo tā, tā nándé gēn biérén liáodelái. Nǐ děng yíxià zài lái zhǎo tā ba.

Don’t bother him. It’s rare that he gets to talking like this with anyone. Come back in a bit.

 

Usage The complement 來 can only be used in the potential mode, and only with such social verbs as 談tán, 合hé, 聊liáo, 處chǔ.
