Function The adverb 不至於 negates the worst possible scenario under the given circumstances, not to the extent of..., will not be as bad as....

1 路上車子雖然很多，但還不至於塞車。

Lù shàng chēzi suīrán hěn duō, dàn hái búzhìyú sāichē.

There are lots of cars on the road, but it’s not congested yet.

2 他條件那麼好，不至於找不到工作吧？

Tā tiáojiàn nàme hǎo, búzhìyú zhǎobúdào gōngzuò ba?

He’s certainly qualified. It’s not so bad that he won’t be able to find a job, right?

3 他個性是不太好，可是不至於害別人。

Tā gèxìng shì bútài hǎo, kěshì búzhìyú hài biérén.

He’s a little volatile, but not so much so that he’d hurt anyone.

4 雖然我不太喜歡做飯，但還不至於每天都在外面吃。

Suīrán wǒ bútài xǐhuān zuòfàn, dàn hái búzhìyú měi tiān dū zài wàimiàn chī.

I don’t particularly like cooking, but it’s not to the point that I eat out every day.

5 我們兩個的意見是有一點不同，但我還不至於生他的氣。

Wǒmen liǎng ge de yìjiàn shì yǒu yīdiǎn bùtóng, dàn wǒ hái búzhìyú shēng tā de qì.

We may have conflicting viewpoints, but not to the point that I am upset at him over it.

6 A：小華膽子很小，他是不是晚上不敢一個人在家？

Xiǎohuá dǎnzi hěn xiǎo, tā shìbúshì wǎnshàng bù gǎn yí ge rén zài jiā?

Xiaohua is a bit gutless. Do you think he’s scared to be home alone at night?

B：不至於吧！

Búzhìyú ba!

It will never be that serious.

 

Usage 不至於 is an S2-Adv, i.e., no utterance begins with it. It is used in the second, or later, sentence.
