▎畢竟, bìjìng, (Adv), after all, to Urge Concession

 

Function With the adverb 畢竟, the speaker urges the addressee to accept what cannot be helped or avoided.

1 雖然現在很多年輕人批評他，但我認為我們都應該尊敬他。畢竟他對國家還是有不少貢獻。

Suīrán xiànzài hěn duō niánqīng rén pīpíng tā, dàn wǒ rènwéi wǒmen dōu yīnggāi zūnjìng tā. Bìjìng tā duì guójiā háishì yǒu bù shǎo gòngxiàn.

He has come under a lot of criticism among younger people, but I think we still ought to respect him. After all, he had done so much for our country.

2 我們餐飲業還算景氣，不過畢竟物價上漲了不少，所以我的生活還是苦哈哈的。

Wǒmen cānyǐnyè hái suàn jǐngqì, búguò bìjìng wùjià shàngzhǎng le bù shǎo, suǒyǐ wǒ de shēnghuó háishì kǔhāhā de.

Our food and beverage industry is doing well, but after all, commodity prices have risen quite a bit, so times are still hard for me.

3 聽古典音樂的人畢竟比較少。那場音樂會的票應該還買得到吧。

Tīng gǔdiǎn yīnyuè de rén bìjìng bǐjiào shǎo. Nà chǎng yīnyuèhuì de piào yīnggāi hái mǎidedào ba.

There aren’t many people that listen to classical music after all, so there should still be tickets available for that performance.

4 整型畢竟還是有風險的。你再多考慮考慮吧。

Usage As a member of the so-called ‘movable adverbs’, 畢竟bìjìng can occur before a VP or at the beginning of a clause. Other such adverbs include 難道nándào, 大概dàgài, 居然jūrán, 隨時suíshí, 到底dàodǐ.
