gèwèi guānzhòng wǎnshang hǎo! jīntiān tiānxià yī jiā lánmù yǒuxìng qǐngdào le Zhèng jiàoshòu zuò wǒmen de jiābīn. Zhèng jiàoshòu, nínhǎo!

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! On today's "One Big Family" program we have the fortune of being joined by a special guest, Professor Zheng. Hello, Professor Zheng.

B:   大家好!

dàjiā hǎo!

Hi, everybody!

Zhèng jiàoshòu ne, shì diǎnxíng de běifāngrén zài nánfāng. jīntiān, tā yào gēn wǒmen tán yi tán Zhōngguó de nánběi chāyì.

Professor Zheng is the typical northerner in the south. Today he's going to talk to us about the differences between China's north and south.

nánběi chāyì yào xìshuō dehuà, kǒngpà sāntiānsānyè yě shuōbùwán.

If you want to go into detail about the differences, I'm afraid that even in three days and nights we couldn't cover them all.

nà zánmen jiù jiǎndān diǎnr shuō shuo.

Then let's just cover some general topics.

dàjiā dōu zhīdào, běifāngrén chī miànshí bǐjiào duō. wǒ gāng lái nánfāng de shíhou gēn péngyou shuō wǒ bù xǐhuan chī mǐ, wǒ ài chī miàn. jiéguǒ bèi cháoxiào le yīdùn.

Everyone knows that northerners eat a lot of wheat products. When I had just arrived in the south I said to some friends, I don't like eating rice grains. I like to eat noodles. And then I was made fun of.

hēhē, mǐ shì shēng de, fàn cái shì shú de. shēng mǐ zhǔ chéng shú fàn ma!

Heh heh. Rice grains are uncooked. Rice is cooked. [The saying is,] "uncooked rice grains are boiled and become rice," no?

shì a. shuō" chī mǐ”, biérén huì xiàohuà de. bùnéng shuō" chī mǐ”, yào shuō chī mǐfàn, huòzhě chīfàn.

Right. If you say "eat rice grains" you'll get made fun of. You can't say, "eat rice grains;" you have to say "eat rice" or "eat some rice."

Pretty interesting. What else is different?

háiyǒu a, nánfāngrén bǎ bāozi yě jiàozuò mántou. càibāo jiù jiào" cài mántou”, ròubāo jiù jiào" ròu mántou”. méi xiànr de jiào" shíxīn mántou”. wǒ gāng tīngdào de shíhou juéde tèbié qíguài.

And then southerns like to call stuffed buns [plain] steamed buns. So a stuffed bun with vegetables in it is a "vegetable bun," and one stuffed with meat is called a "meat bun." If it has no filling it's called a "solid bun." When I first heard it I thought it was really weird.

ò, zhè shì jiàofǎ de bùtóng.

OK, so a difference in names for things.

ng4. zài shuō tiānqì. běifāngrén dōu yǐwèi nánfāng de dōngtiān bù lěng. qíshí bùshì de.

Right. And then there's weather. Northerns all think winter in the south isn't cold. But actually that's not true.

A:   哦?

ò?

Oh?

dōngtiān qìwēn dàoshì bù dī, bùguò nánfāng shì shīlěng, duō chuān yīfu dōu méiyòng. shénme dōu shì cháoshī de, xiàng xī le shuǐ shìde. zài jiāshang méi nuǎnqì, lěng qǐlái zhēn yàomìng. yī dào dōngtiān wǒ jiù tèbié huáiniàn běifāng de huǒlú huòzhě nuǎnqì.

Winter temperatures aren't actually low, but in the south it's a wet cold, and wearing more layers doesn't help. Everything is humid, like you're breathing water in. Plus there's no central heating, so when it gets cold it's awful. When winter comes, I especially miss the stoves and central heat of the north.

ò, nánfāng yǔ duō, cháoshī.

Oh, lots of rainfall in the south, so it's humid.

běifāng jiàngyǔ shǎo, gānhàn. suǒyǐ wǒ xiǎng" chūnyǔ guì rú yóu” zhīlèi de yànyǔ yīnggāi shì běifāngrén zǒngjié chūlái de. bùguò rénmen cháng shuō nǚrén shì shuǐ zuò de, nánfāng shīrùn de qìhòu duì nǚxìng de pífū dàoshì bǐjiào hǎo.

In the north there's little rainfall, so it's dry. That's why I think "spring rain is as precious as oil" and similar sayings probably came out of the north. But people often say that women are made of water, and the moist climate of the south is better for a woman's skin.

kànlai Zhèng jiàoshòu shì kuā wǒmen nánfāng nǚzǐ le. dàn cóng shēngāo láishuō, hǎoxiàng běifāngrén, yóuqí shì běifāng nánrén gèng gāodà wēiměng yīxiē. bùshì cháng shuō" shāndōng dàhàn” ma?

I think Professor Zheng is praising our southern females. But when it comes to height, it seems that northerners -- especially northern men -- are a bit taller and more intimidating. Don't we often say, "Shandong Strongmen?"

tōngcháng běifāngrén gāodà yīxiē. bùguò yě yǒu tèlì, wǒ jiùshì Shāndōng rén, hēhē.

Northerners are usually a bit larger. But there are also special cases. I'm from Shandong! Heh heh.

nóngsuō de cáishì jīnghuá ma! duìle, yǒu rén shuō zài jiēshang kàndào liǎng ge rén dǎjià, shíyǒubājiǔ shì běifāngrén, nín juéde ne?

Distilled down to the very essence, right? By the way, some people say that if you see two people fighting on the street, eight or nine times out of ten they're northerners. What do you think?

zhè wèntí yǒudiǎnr jiānruì. bùguò bǐqǐ nánfāngrén lái, běifāngrén de xìnggé zhíshuǎng háofàng, huǒqì dà yīxiē. lìshǐ shàng de měngjiàng dà dōu chūzì běifāng.

That question is a bit pointed. But compared with southerners, northerners' personalities are more straightforward and frank, with more of a temper. Most of our history's great generals came out of the north.

jiǎng dào xìnggé jiù gèng fùzá le. qǐng dàjiā bù yào zǒukāi, guǎnggào zhīhòu, jīngcǎi jìxù.

When you get into personality the situation becomes even more complex. Everyone, please don't go away. After these messages, we'll be right back with more.
