A: 是啊，今年18了，剛參加了高考。唉，劉教授，我聽我那口子說，您現在在教《易經》？我聽說那個老高深了。

The school started it as an elective course. I'm the lecturer. The I Ching is quintessential to Chinese studies. Speaking on it is quite interesting.
A: 我還聽說，懂《易經》的肯定會算卦。劉教授，您受累幫我家兒子算算這次高考能不能中。
wǒ hái tīngshuō, dǒng《 Yìjīng》 de kěndìng huì suànguà. Liú jiàoshòu, nín shòulèi bāng wǒ jiā érzi suàn suan zhècì gāokǎo néng bu néng zhòng.
I've also heard that if you understand the I Ching, you can tell fortunes. Professor Liu, can I trouble you to determine whether my son will be able to pass the college entrance exam?
B: 其實你不明白，卦是不能算的，是用來解釋和參照的。
qíshí nǐ bù míngbai, guà shì bùnéng suàn de, shì yònglái jiěshì hé cānzhào de.
Actually, you don't quite understand. The diagrams can't be used for divination. They're used for analysis and consultation.
A: 哦，這個怎麼說？
ò, zhè ge zěnme shuō?
Oh, what does all that mean?
B: 《 易經》最初有八卦，這個“卦”的意思就是掛起來的“掛”，也就是說你應該把它掛起來，然後經常看，就能參透其中的道理。這個和占卜是不一樣的。你知道的占卜算命等說法，其實是後人將《易經》理論延伸後的產物。
Yìjīng》 zuìchū yǒu bāguà, zhè ge" guà” de yìsi jiùshì guà qǐlái de" guà”, yějiùshìshuō nǐ yīnggāi bǎ tā guà qǐlái, ránhòu jīngcháng kàn, jiù néng cāntòu qízhōng de dàolǐ. zhè ge hé zhānbǔ shì bù yīyàng de. nǐ zhīdào de zhānbǔ suànmìng děng shuōfǎ, qíshí shì hòurén jiāng Yìjīng》 lǐlùn yánshēn hòu de chǎnwù.
Initially, the I Ching had the 8 trigrams. The meaning of this 'trigram' comes from the word, 'gua', or to hang up; meaning that you should first hang it up, examine it often, and then you will be able to fully understand the rationality within it. This is different than the practice of divination. The practice of divination and fortune telling that you know, are actually the products of later generations expanding on the theories of the I Ching.
A: 哦。

B: 如果說把易經和占卜算命混為一談的話，其實是歪曲了伏羲他老人家的本意啊。
rúguǒ shuō bǎ Yìjīng hé zhānbǔ suànmìng hùnwéiyītán dehuà, qíshí shì wāiqū le Fúxī tā lǎorénjiā de běnyì a.
To confuse the I Ching with divination and fortune telling, is actually a distortion of the founder, Fuxi's original meaning.
A: 伏羲？是住5號樓的那家嗎？
Fúxī? shì zhù wǔ hào lóu de nà jiā ma?
Fuxi? The one that lives in building number 5?
C: 哎呀，媽媽，劉教授講的是《易經》的作者，是遠古時代的人物，您扯哪兒去啦。
āiyā, māma, Liú jiàoshòu jiǎng de shì Yìjīng》 de zuòzhě, shì yuǎngǔshídài de rénwù, nín chě nǎr qù la.
Come on, Mom. Professor Liu is talking about the author of the I Ching. He's a person from ancient times. What are you talking about?
B: 哈哈，你們語文老師一定有講過這些知識吧。

C: 嗯，不過是作為課外材料來講的。當時我對這部古籍也挺感興趣的，《易經》其實是一套解釋宇宙萬物的理論系統，劉教授你說對嗎？
ng4, bùguò shì zuòwéi kèwàicáiliào lái jiǎng de. dāngshí wǒ duì zhè bù gǔjí yě tǐng gǎn xìngqù de, Yìjīng》 qíshí shì yī tào jiěshì yǔzhòu wànwù de lǐlùn xìtǒng, Liú jiàoshòu nǐ shuō duì ma?
Yeah, but it was only discussed as material for extra-curricular studies. At the time, I was already pretty interested in these ancient texts. The I Ching is actually a theoretical system for analyzing the universe and everything in it. Is that right, Professor Liu?
B: 的確如此，其實人類科學越發達，你越會發現《易經》的正確性。
díquè rúcǐ, qíshí rénlèi kēxué yuè fādá, nǐ yuè huì fāxiàn Yìjīng》 de zhèngquèxìng.
That's exactly right. Actually, the more developed science becomes, the more you'll realize the validity of the I Ching.
C: 嗯，我明白。不過有些說法還是挺難理解的，比如六十四卦中的一些解釋。
ng4, wǒ míngbai. bùguò yǒuxiē shuōfǎ háishì tǐng nán lǐjiě de, bǐrú liùshísìguà zhōng de yīxiē jiěshì.
Yeah, that makes sense. However, some expressions are quite hard to figure out. For example, some of the explanations of the 64 diagrams.
B: 別急，等你對太極、兩儀、四象、八卦等等這些含義有了充分理解後，自然會用《易經》的語言來解釋每一個卦義。
bié jí, děng nǐ duì tàijí、 liǎngyí、 sìxiàng、 bāguà děngdeng zhèxiē hányì yǒu le chōngfèn lǐjiě hòu, zìrán huì yòng Yìjīng》 de yǔyán lái jiěshì měi yī ge guàyì.
Don't worry. Wait until after you fully understand the implications of Tai Chi, the two polarities, the idea of four components and the eight trigrams. Then, you will naturally be able to use the language of the I Ching to analyze the meaning of each diagram.
C: 劉教授，我可以去聽你的課嗎？
Liú jiàoshòu, wǒ kěyǐ qù tīng nǐ de kè ma?
Professor Liu, can I go sit in on your class?
