hāi, nǐ zài gànmá ne?
Hey, what are you up to?
ō, wǒ xiǎng huàn ge xīn deshǒujī língshēng, zhèng cóng wǎngshàng xiàzǎi ne. UNKNOWN juéde zhōu jié lún de《 qiān lǐ zhīwài zhīwài》 zěnmeyàng?
Oh, I'd like to change my cellphone's ring-tone. I'm just downloading one from the Net. What do you think of Jay Chow's ''Thousands of Miles Apart?"
yī tīng de shíhou juéde tǐng bièniu, zhōu jié lún hé Fèi Yùqīng, yī ge shì chàngR\&B de, yī ge shì chàng měishēngmíngē xiǎodiào de, tīng zhè liǎng rén duìchàng, gāng kāishǐ de shíhou zhēnde hěnbù xíguàn. bùguò hòulái kàn leMV, yòu duō tīng le jǐ biàn, jiù tīngchū wèidao le. UNKNOWN hái bié shuō, zuìjìn hǎoxiàng hěn liúxíng zhèzhǒng Zhōngxī hébì de gēqǔ ā.
The first time I heard it I thought it was really awkward-- Jay Chow and Fei Yu Qing-- one sings R&B, the other sings operatic folk songs. At first I was really unaccustomed to hearing the two of them singing together. But then I saw the music video and listened to it a few more times, and I could understand the appeal. It seems like this kind of song that combines Western and Chinese elements has gotten really popular lately.
shì a, yǐqián de liúxíng gēqǔ zhǐshì dānchún dì mófǎng xīfāng deR\&B( jiézòubùlǔsī), xī hā(hip-hop) hé shuōchàng(rap), zhèjǐnián bùshǎo yīnyuèrén dōu kāishǐ chángshì zài liúxíng gēqǔ zhōng róngrù yīxiē Zhōngguó chuántǒng wénhuà de yuánsù, xiàng wánglìhóng de xīn gē《 zài Méi Biān》 jiùshì qǔcái yú Kūnjù de《 mǔdāntíng》, Táo Zhé de《 sū sān shuō》 dàiyǒujīngjù de yùnwèi, zhōu jié lún de hěn duō gē lǐ yě dōu yùnyòng le gǔdiǎnshīcí hé Zhōngguó de mínzú yuèqì, wǒ tèbié xǐhuan.
Yeah. In the past, pop songs just purely imitated Western R&B (Rhythm and Blues) hip-hop and rap. In the last few years, a lot of musicians have started to incorporate some traditional Chinese elements into pop music. Think of Wang Li Hong's new song ''Beside the Plumtree" which gets its inspiration from ''The Peony Pavilion," a Kun Opera. David Tao's ''Su San Says" has a bit of the charm of Beijing opera. And a lot of Jay Chow's songs make use of classical poetry and Chinese ethnic instruments. I like them a lot.
bùguò bìng bù shì suǒyǒurén dōu néng jiēshòu zhèzhǒng xīn yīnyuèxíngshì de, tèbié shì niánjì dà de rén, zǒng juéde zhèzhǒng yīnyuè bù zhōng bù xī, bùlúnbùlèi, zāotà le Zhōngguó de chuántǒng wénhuà.
But these new kinds of music definitely aren't for everybody. Especially older people-- they always think that this kind of music is neither Chinese nor Western, it's neither fish nor fowl. It's made a mockery of traditional Chinese culture.
huà bùnéng zhème shuō ā, UNKNOWN kàn xiàn zài de niánqīngrén, yǒu jǐge duì jīngjù、 kūnqǔ gǎnxìngqù ā, kūnqǔ shènzhì dōu kuài shīchuánle, chuántǒng wénhuà yě yào yǔshíjūjìn cái yǒu shēngmìnglì ma. xiàn zài de niánqīngrén dōu xǐhuan tīng liúxíng yīnyuè, rúguǒ bǎ chuántǒng wénhuà de yuánsù róngrùdào liúxíng gēqǔ zhōng, yīnggāi hěn róngyì yǐnqǐ niánqīngrén de xìngqù hé guānzhù, zhè bù shì yījiànhǎo shì ma?
They can't say that. Look at young people these days-- how many of them are interested in Peking or Kun opera? Kun opera has almost been lost forever. The only way traditional culture can stay alive is by keeping pace with the times. Modern kids like to listen to pop music. If you blend some traditional cultural elements into popular music, it should be easy to get young people to pay attention-- isn't that a good thing?
shuō děi yě shì. bùguò liúxíng yīnyuè hěn róngyì guòshí de, zhèzhǒng yīnyuèxíngshì xiànzài hěn shòu huānyíng, shì yīnwèi dàjiā juéde xīnxiān, yǐhòu zhèyàngdegē yuèláiyuèduō, hěn kuài jiù huì tīng nì de.
You're right. But it's easy for pop music to become obsolete. This music is so popular now because everyone thinks it's fresh. But then as this kind of music gets more and more common, people will get sick of it.
wǒ kě bù zhèyàng xiǎng. rúguǒ zhēnde shìhǎo zuòpǐn jiù yī dìng huì liúchuán xiàqù de. nǐ kàn nàxiē jīngdiǎn de Ōuměi lǎo gē, dōu yǐjīng guòle sānbǎi sìshí nián le, bù shì hái yǒu nàme duō rén rén xǐhuan ma.
I really don't see things that way. If it's a good piece of work, it will definitely be passed down. Look at those classic old European and North American songs-- they've been around for thirty or forty years, and people still love them.
nà qiántí shì yàoyǒu hǎo zuòpǐn ā. yào bǎ Zhōng- Xīfāng de yīnyuèyuánsù jiéhé de hǎo kěbushì yījiàn róngyì de shì.
So that just goes to show that the work has to be good. It's not easy to combine Chinese and Western elements well.
shì a, yīnyuèrén chúle yàoyǒu hǎo de yīnyuè sùyǎng wài, duì mínzú de chuántǒng wénhuà yě yàoyǒu hěn shēn de liǎojiě.
Yeah, not only do the musicians have to be accomplished musicians, they also need a deep understanding of traditional culture.
érqiě hái bùnéng mángmù gēnfēng, yàoyǒu zìjǐ de gèxìng hé tèsè.
And they can't just blindly hop on the bandwagon. They need to have their own individuality and special characteristics.
duì duì duì, xiànzài kěshì qiángdiào gèxìng de shídài, yǔzhòngbùtóng cáinéng xīyǐnrén men gèng duō de guānzhù.
Right! These days individuality is really important. The only way you can get people to pay attention to you is by standing out from the crowd.
