wǒ zuìjìn lǎo kàndào jiǔbā lǐ yǒu miànjù, nánguā de zhuāngshì, shuō shì qìngzhù wànshèngjié. zhè dàodǐ shì ge shénme jiérì yā?

Recently I'm constantly seeing masks and pumpkin decorations in bars. They say it's to celebrate Halloween. What kind of holiday is this, exactly?

hāi, zhème qiǎo!wǒ yě duì zhège hěn hàoqí, suǒyǐ shàngwǎng chá le yīxià. wǒmen xiànzài suǒ qìngzhù de wànshèngjié quèqiē de shuō yīnggāi shì `` wànshèngjié qiányè" , shì zài shíyuè sānshíyī hào. tā qǐchū shì Aìěrlán kǎiěrtèrén de guǐjié, zhè jiùshì wèishénme xiànzài rénmen yǐ gǔlíngjīngguài de dǎbàn qìngzhù wànshèngjié. bùguò liúchuán dào xiànzài, tā de yìyì yě bùtóng le, biànde jījí kuàilè hé xǐqìng. jiùxiàng kāi yī ge dà pàiduì.

Hey, what a great coincidence! I'm also really curious about this. So I researched it a bit online. To be exactly correct, the holiday that we celebrate now should be called ``Halloween Eve." It's October thirty-first. Originally it was a ghost holiday for the Irish Celts, which is why people these days get dressed so weird to celebrate Halloween. But after being passed down to the present time, its significance is different. It's become positive and joyful. It's like having a party.

yuánlái shì zhèyàng. zhèjǐnián Zhōngguó de wàiguórén duō le, yě bǎ tāmen de wénhuà dàidào le zhèlǐ. bùguò, bù xiàng shèngdànjié hé qíngrénjié, zhīdào wànshèngjié de zhōngguórén hái hěn shǎo, gèng biétí qìngzhù le. zhǐyǒu yīxiē wàiguórén duō de dìfang, bǐrú jiǔbā, cái huì yǒu yīxiē qìfēn.

Oh, so that's how it is. In the last few years, more foreigners have come to China, and they've also brought their culture over here. But it's not like Christmas and Valentine's Day. Very few Chinese people know about Halloween, and to say nothing of celebrating it. Only places like bars, that have a lot of foreigners, have a little bit of Halloween atmosphere .

shì ā, bùguò wǒ zài wàiguórén de chāoshì yě kàndào hǎoduō wànshèngjié de nánguā dēng. qíshí zhège jiérì hái yǒu yī ge hěn zhòngyào de bùfen, jiùshì xiǎo háizi wèn línjū yào táng chī. tāmen huì jǐge rén yīqǐ, rǎo zhe zìjǐ zhù de dìfang, yī jiā yī jiā qiāomén, shuō: `` trickortreat?" rúguǒ nǎ jiā méiyǒu yòng hǎo dōngxi zhāodài tāmen, tāmen jiù huì gǎo èzuòjù.

Yeah, but I've seen a lot of Halloween pumpkin lamps at foreign supermarkets. Actually, there's another really important aspect of this holiday: kids have to ask their neighbors for candy. A few of them go around the place the live together, knocking on each family's door and saying ``trick or treat?" If anyone has nothing for them, they'll make some mischief.

ā, zhè bù shì wēixié ma? bùguò xiǎo háizi yī nián yě jiù zhème yī tiān néng zhèyàng wán, dàren kěndìng yě néng yuánliàng tāmen. rúguǒ Zhōngguó xiǎohái zhīdào zhèdiǎn, yě yīdìng huì xǐhuan wànshèngjié de.

Agh, isn't that a threat? But little kids only get to play that way one night per year, so adults must be willing to forgive them. If Chinese kids knew about this, they would definitely like Halloween.

shì ā. bùguò duì wǒmen dàren láishuō, zǒng juéde hé zhège jiérì yǒu jùlí. wǒ lǎo bù míngbai wèishénme wàiguórén duì tā zhème zhòngshì, xiànzài xiǎng qǐlai, tóngnián guòjié shí hǎowánr de jìyì dàgài yě shì yī ge hěn zhòngyào de yuányīn ba.

Yeah. But we adults always feel some distance from this holiday. I've never understood why foreigners take it so seriously. Thinking about it now, a major reason must be their memories of the fun they had as kids.

én, wǒmen zhōngguórén zhèng shì yīnwèi méiyǒu zhèzhǒng jìyì, suǒyǐ hěn nán lǐjiě hé gǎnshòu wànshèngjié de mèilì.

Agh, because we've never had these memories, it's very hard for us Chinese to understand and enjoy the charm of Halloween.
