rúguǒ yǒu rén tóu dài yī dǐng yuándǐng dà lǐmào, shàngshēn chuān yījiàn zhǎixiǎo de lǐfú, xiàshēn chuān yījiàn tè dà de féituǐkù, jiǎo dēng qiàojiān dà píxié, liú zhe yī piě xiǎohúzǐ, shǒu chí xì guǎizhàng, mài zhe qǐé bù, nǐ cāi tā zài mófǎng shéi?

Guess: if someone wears a big round top hat, with a very tight top and extremely baggy pants, with pointy leather shoes, and they have a little moustache, carry a thin walking stick and waddle like a penguin, who are they imitating?

zhè hái yòng shuō ma? dāngrán shì Zhuōbiélín! zhè kěshì tā de jīngdiǎn xíngxiàng.

Doesn't it go without saying? Charlie Chaplin, of course. That's the classic representation of him.

A 哈哈。

hāhā. méixiǎngdào nǐ duì Zhuōbiélín yě zhème shúxī, yī cāi jiù cāi chūlai le.

Ha ha. I had no idea you were so familiar with Chaplin. You guessed it immediately.

nà dāngrán, tā kěshì wǒ de ǒuxiàng. wǒ juéde tā shì wúshēng diànyǐng shíqī zuì yǒu cáinéng hé yǐngxiǎng zuìdà de rénwù zhīyī. wǒ yīzhí hěn xǐhuan tā biǎoyǎn de fěngcì diànyǐng hé tā de hēisè yōumò. jíbiàn shì wúshēng diànyǐng, yě néng tōngguò tā chūsè de biǎoyǎn lái biǎodá chū shēnkè de nèihán, ràngrén zài rěnjùnbùjīn de tóngshí yòu néng gǎnshòu chū tā suǒ biǎodá de duì dāngshí shèhuì hēiàn de fěngcì, zhè zài dāngshí zhēnde shì hěn liǎo bu qǐ.

Well, of course-- he's my idol. I think he's one of the most influential and talented people of the silent film era. I've always liked his satirical movies and his black humor. Even though they're silent movies, he's able to convey deep meaning with his excellent performances. You can't help laughing, and you can enjoy his send-ups of the dark side of society. At the time, that was really something.

Yeah. I've also seen a lot of Chaplin's movies. The things they talk about all occur in people's daily lives, but the way he portrays them in a funny and exaggerated way give them a special comedic effect. He's even able to make un-funny things hilarious. But after laughing, you always feel a bit bittersweet, and full of sympathy for the oppressed and mistreated. His ``Tramp" has already become a classic.

That's for sure. I think that Chaplin skillfully grasped the characteristics of his era. He used exaggerated methods to portray reality. He's given generations of audiences endless laughs. And hiding behind all the laughter, there's the desolation and loneliness of life. He resonated powerfully with his audiences.

A 是呀。

shì yā. Zhuōbiélín de diànyǐng jiǎnzhí chéng le èrshí zhì wǔshí niándài diànyǐng de yīzhǒng biāozhì. chéngshì zhī guāng, módēng shídài, dà dúcáizhězhèxiē yǐngpiàn bùjǐn zài Měiguó, yě zài shìjiè gèdì yǐnqǐ le guānzhòng nónghòu de xìngqù. tā de hěn duō diànyǐng zài Zhōngguó yě tèbié shòu huānyíng, shōulù Zhuōbiélín jīngdiǎn diànyǐng de zhēncángbǎn DVD dào xiànzài hái gōngbùyìngqiú.

Yeah. Chaplin's movies are simply a standard for movies from the twenties to the fifties. ``City Lights," ``Modern Times," and ``The Great Dictator,"-- these movies have attracted great interest among audiences not only in America but around the world. A lot of his movies are also very popular in China. To this day, the supply of classic Chaplin DVD collections can't match the demand.

wǒ jiù shōucáng le hěn duō Zhuōbiélín de diànyǐng. kěnéng Zhuōbiélín zài tā de diànyǐng chuàngzuò zhōng yīguàn duì xiǎorénwù hé shīyèzhě jìyǔ shēnqiè de tóngqíng, cháofěng zīběnzhǔyì hé tǒngzhì jiēcéng, bìng zhīchí mínzhǔ jìnbù yùndòng, suǒyǐ cōng yī kāishǐ Zhuōbiélín hé tā de diànyǐng jiù zài Zhōngguó guǎng shòu huānyíng.

I've collected a lot of Chaplin movies. Chaplin was always deeply sympathetic toward the little guy and the out of work, and made fun of capitalism and the powers that be. He supported progressive democratic movements, and so from the very beginning, Chaplin and his movies have been very popular in China.

nǐ zhīdào ma? Zhuōbiélín hé Zhōngguó hái hěn yǒu yuānyuán ne. Zhuōbiélín hé tā dāngshí de qīzi Bǎo Lián yīzhí yǒu zhe tànxiǎn dōngfāng de mèngxiǎng, tā huán céngjīng fēifù Tánxiāngshān, tā hé Bǎo Lián yě shì zài Zhōngguó de Guǎngzhōu jǔxíng de hūnlǐ.

You know what? There's a deep connection between Chaplin and China. Chaplin and his then-wife Bao Lian always dreamed of exploring the Orient. Once he flew to Honolulu, and he and Bao Lian were married in Guangzhou, China.

No wonder! I've also heard that Chaplin's late-period movie ``A Countess from Hong Kong," was dreamed up when he was traveling in the East. I believe most Chinese people are extremely familiar with Chaplin's movies. When I went to Switzerland, I made a special trip to his old residence. Really, whenever I think of him I think of the humor of the silent movies of those times.
