Well, I guess I'd rather believe in magic than not believe in it. Some things are really dangerous. It's like they're destined to happen. The fortune teller that my mom often visits makes really accurate predictions. He's very learned, and an expert on the I Ching. There's no way he's the kind of fraud who just pulls stuff out of nowhere. One time, the fortune teller told my mom that in the future, there would be some scars on my face. Sure enough, when I was in middle school and my classmate and I were riding bikes downhill, I had an accident and there really is some scarring on my lip. How's that for accuracy?

Sometimes we do those things together. I've always said, you can't completely trust predictions of your future, and you can't totally mistrust them either. There's always a cause and effect when something happens. These fortune tellers can help you find the reason something happens, and come up with a solution. That's not necessarily a bad thing, you know.

I don't agree with your opinion. These things are not necessarily just pointless nonsense. It's like the development of astrology in the West. China's I Ching and hexagrams are a branch of astrological knowledge.

Giving children meaningful names, moving, weddings and funerals: there is a lot of research that goes into these things. Of course, we can't rule out the possibility that some people who haven't really mastered the I Ching just make wild guesses, coming up with stories and scamming people.

I still think there's just no proof or evidence for this stuff. Only you can determine the course of your life-- it's not fixed by your birth date! Just take palm-reading as an example. Do you really believe that the wrinkles in your hand can represent the course of your entire life? And then there's dream interpretation-- I have a dream that predicts I'll win a big prize. There's no logic behind that.

Hey, I'm really not trying to persuade you to believe in these kinds of magical predictions. On the other hand, I really admire your courage in refusing to defer to fate.
