The upper-intermediate materials stress reading comprehension, which is mostly for taking the HSK. It doesn't do much for one's spoken language.

There's a lot of idioms too. One look at idioms and the students are overwhelmed. There's no need to study so many idioms. Even Chinese people can't sit around speaking in idioms all day.
