What? Philosophy? What's so great about majoring in that kind of thing?

I knew you guys would be against it. But, I'm just interested in philosophy.

You just don't understand. In other countries, philosophy is a very respected field of study. Studying philosophy gives people different ideas and ways of thinking.

A:   我看那些搞哲學的人，沒一個是正常的，不是瘋子，就是傻子。

wǒ kàn nàxiē gǎo zhéxué de rén, méi yī ge shì zhèngcháng de, bùshì fēngzi, jiùshì shǎzi.

In my opinion, out of all those people who do philosophy, there isn't a single normal one. If they aren't crazy, they're stupid.

B:   是啊！兒子，我們家一沒錢二沒權，還是讀個實際一點的專業吧。以後好找工作。

shì a! érzi, wǒmen jiā yī méi qián èr méi quán, háishì dú ge shíjì yīdiǎn de zhuānyè ba. yǐhòu hǎo zhǎo gōngzuò.

Son, our family doesn't have money or power. It'd be better for you to study something a little more practical; something that makes getting a job easy.

C:   哲學是很多學科的基礎，以後能走的路很寬。

zhéxué shì hěn duō xuékē de jīchǔ, yǐhòu néng zǒu de lù hěn kuān.

Philosophy is the foundation of a lot of fields, and there's a lot you can do with it.

A:   我們吃過的鹽比你吃過的飯還多。什麼沒見識過啊？我們是為你的前途著想，才勸你不要讀哲學。

wǒmen chī guo de yán bǐ nǐ chī guo de fàn hái duō. shénme méi jiànshi guo a? wǒmen shì wèi nǐ de qiántú zhuóxiǎng, cái quàn nǐ bù yào dú zhéxué.

We've gone through more rough times than all the times in your life combined. What haven't we been through? When we advise you not to study philosophy, we're only thinking of your future.

C:   可是我有自己的理想。

But I have my own ideals.

A:   那我告訴你，要讀哲學沒門兒。

I'm telling you, there's no chance of you studying philosophy!

You don't have the right to interfere!

nǐ shì wǒ érzi, jiù děi tīng wǒ de. zhè ge jiā wǒ shuō le suàn.

You're my son. You have to listen to me. In this house, what I say goes.

C:   我的人生我自己決定。我就是要讀哲學。

I make the decisions about my life. I'm going to study philosophy.

Fine. I'm leaving right now!

B:   兒子，你去哪兒？你回來！

érzi, nǐ qù nǎr? nǐ huílai!

Son, where are you going? Come back!

A:   別攔著他，讓他走！走了就別再回來！

bié lán zhe tā, ràng tā zǒu! zǒu le jiù bié zài huílai!

Don't stop him! Let him go! And after you leave, don't come back again!
