What is your plan for university?

B 北大或者復旦吧。還沒決定。我媽希望我去上海，我爸想讓我上北大。

Běidà huòzhě Fùdàn ba. hái méi juédìng. wǒ mā xīwàng wǒ qù Shànghǎi, wǒ bà xiǎng ràng wǒ shàng Běidà.

Either Beijing University or Fudan University. I haven't decided yet. My mom hopes I go to Shanghai, and my dad wants me to attend Beijing University.

A 名氣還是北大響一些。不是說北大是中國的哈佛，復旦是中國的耶魯嗎？

míngqì hái shì Běidà xiǎng yīxiē. bùshì shuō Běidà shì Zhōngguó de Hāfó, Fùdàn shì Zhōngguó de Yēlǔ ma?

Beijing University has a better reputation. Don't they say that Beijing University is the Harvard of China, while Fudan is the Yale?

B 北大多神聖啊，歷史悠久，都是高手，我崇拜死他們了。

Běidà duō shénshèng a, lìshǐ yōujiǔ, dōu shì gāoshǒu, wǒ chóngbài sǐ tāmen le.

Beijing University is so revered, and has such a long history. Everyone there is so top notch--I'm in awe of them.

A 復旦也是老牌名校啊，哎，據說復旦很早以前的兩位老校長都是耶魯畢業的。

Fùdàn yě shì lǎopái míngxiào a, ái, jùshuō Fùdàn hěn zǎo yǐqián de liǎng wèi lǎo xiàozhǎng dōu shì Yēlǔ bìyè de.

Fudan is also a renowned school. Hey, they say a long time ago two of Fudan's school presidents were Yale graduates.

B 是嗎？對我們文科生來說，要考就考北大復旦。

shì ma? duì wǒmen wénkē shēng láishuō, yào kǎo jiù kǎo Běidà Fùdàn.

Really? According to our Liberal Arts department, I should try to get into Beijing University or Fudan.

A 哇！尖子生就是不一樣！

wa! jiānzi shēng jiùshì bù yīyàng!

Wow! We are not in the same league!

B 兩個大學校風都很好，都特別鼓勵學生獨立思考。但北大好像是政治的感覺比較濃，而復旦比較自由和小資。

liǎng ge dàxué xiàofēng dōu hěn hǎo, dōu tèbié gǔlì xuésheng dúlì sīkǎo. dàn Běidà hǎoxiàng shì zhèngzhì de gǎnjué bǐjiào nóng, ér Fùdàn bǐjiào zìyóu hé xiǎozī.

The school atmosphere at both universities is very good, with both encouraging independent thought from their students. Beijing University, however, seems to have a bit more of a political atmosphere; while Fudan is a little more liberal and yuppie.

A 大環境的原因吧。北大就在皇城腳下，復旦嘛，在上海......

dà huánjìng de yuányīn ba. Běidà jiù zài huángchéng jiǎo xià, Fùdàn ma, zài Shànghǎi......

The reason for that is their locations. Beijing University is at the foot the central government, and Fudan... it's in Shanghai.

B 天高皇帝遠，經濟最重要。

tiāngāo huángdì yuǎn, jīngjì zuì zhòngyào.

Way beyond the reaches of the authorities, where economics take priority.

A 行了，我們別光說感覺了，你想考什麼專業呢？

xíng le, wǒ men bié guāng shuō gǎnjué le , nǐ xiǎng kǎo shénme zhuānyè ne?

All right, let's not just talk about what we think, what major are you considering?

B 金融、管理方面的，這些專業熱門。我爸媽都說和平年代搞經濟的賺錢多。

jīnróng, guǎnlǐ fāngmiàn de, zhèxiē zhuānyè rèmén. wǒ bà mā dōu shuō hépíng niándài gǎo jīngjì de zhuànqián duō .

The finance, management side of things. These fields are in great demand. My parents say that in the times of peace, you can make a lot of money in economics.

A 現在熱門的指不定我們畢業的時候就變冷門了呢！

xiànzài rèmén de zhǐbudìng wǒ men bìyè de shíhou jiù biàn lěngmén le ne!

There's no guarantees what's hot now will be in demand when we graduate!

B 新聞、傳播我也挺感興趣的。

xīnwén, chuánbō wǒ yě tǐng gǎn xìngqù de.

I'm also quite interested in journalism and broadcasting.

A 金融的話北大和復旦不相上下。新聞還是復旦牛一些。不過分數線一般都是北大高。

jīnróng dehuà Běidà hé Fùdàn bùxiāngshàngxià. xīnwén háishì Fùdàn niú yīxiē. bùguò fēnshù xiàn yībān dōu shì Běidà gāo.

In regards to finance, Beijing University and Fudan are about the same. Journalism is a bit better at Fudan. But the GPA requirements are higher for Beijing University.

B 嗯。我們還是先好好複習吧。考不好什麼都白搭。

Hmm. We had better get reviewing. If we don't do well on the exams, all of this will be useless.
