A 那天有個朋友問我為什麼上海這麼重視2010年的世博會。我還真不知道呢。

The other day, a friend asked me why Shanghai is taking the 2010 Expo so seriously. I honestly don’t know.
B 其實世博會對不同的人都有不同的意義。比如說老百姓，有些就因為世博會建造場館拆遷，搬到了更好的房子裡。而就上海這個城市而言，最大的意義在於會促進經濟的發展。

Actually the Expo has different meanings for different people. For example, for some common citizens it means that their old homes will be torn down for construction sites, so they will be moved into better houses. In addition, with regard to Shanghai city itself, the most meaningful thing is that it will stimulate economic development.
A 我還是不明白，世博會不就是一個國際性的展覽會嗎？

But I still don’t understand. Isn’t the Expo just an international exhibition?
B 簡單地說的確如此。不過世博會是由政府主辦，多個國家或國際組織參加的大型綜合性展覽。和一般的展覽不同，它展現的是社會，經濟，文化和科技各個領域的成就。它的特點是時間長，規模大，參展國家多，因此影響也非常深遠。

Simply put, yes it is. However, the Expo is hosted by the government. It is a large-scale comprehensive exhibition attended by many different countries and international organizations. The difference between this and other exhibits is that it presents achievements in social, economic, cultural, scientific and technological fields. Its special features are the long duration, the scale of the event, and the many countries that participate. The effects are extremely far-reaching.

Oh! It's almost like a cultural Olympics. We will be able to see exhibits and activities originating from different countries and various fields. The content will definitely not be lacking.
B 沒錯，這也就是為什麼世博會能給主辦國帶來很大的人氣和經濟效益。其實世博會的籌備現在就已經開始了，很多相關設施已經在建設當中。這既給社會提供了很多的就業機會，又改善了我們的生活環境。

Exactly. This is another reason why the Expo is able to bring so many benefits to the economy and reputation of the host country. Actually the preparations for the Expo have already started. Many facilities related to the Expo are already under construction. This has already brought the community a lot of employment opportunities, and has also improved our living environment.
A 噢，怪不得大家提到世博會就這麼興奮。哎，每次世博會是不是都有主題啊？
