▎以後, yĭhòu, (N), in the future, after (Also see 後來hòulái)

 

Function The word 以後 is basically a noun but covers 2 different functions. When it is used alone, it is just like a time word, meaning some time in the future. When it is used together with 2 instances, it connects them sequentially, i.e., after A, B....

 

Structures

1 我們以後都得上班。

Wǒmen yǐhòu dōu děi shàngbān.

We will all have to work in the future.

2 他們以後還要再到台南去。

Tāmen yǐhòu hái yào zài dào Táinán qù.

They want to visit Tainan again in the future.

3 回國以後，我要找個有機會說中文的工作。

Huíguó yǐhòu, wǒ yào zhǎo ge yǒu jīhuì shuō Zhōngwén de gōngzuò.

After going back to my country, I want to look for a job that offers opportunities to speak Chinese.

4 來臺灣以後，我每星期上五天的中文課。

Lái Táiwān yǐhòu, wǒ měi xīngqí shàng wǔ tiān de Zhōngwén kè.

After coming to Taiwan, I have been going to Chinese class five days a week.

5 我下課以後，常在圖書館上網。

Wǒ xiàkè yǐhòu, cháng zài túshūguǎn shàngwǎng.

After class, I often use the internet in the library.

6 2010年以後，他就不教書了。

Èrlíng yīlíng nián yǐhòu, tā jiù bù jiāoshū le.

He stopped teaching as of 2010.
