▎要是 A 就 B, (yàoshì A jiù B), Condition and Consequence

 

Function In this pattern, 要是 presents the condition, while 就 in the second clause presents the consequence.

1 要是我有錢，我就買大房子。

Yàoshì wǒ yǒu qián, wǒ jiù mǎi dà fángzi.

If I were rich, I would buy a big house.

2 我要是不回國，我就跟你們一起去玩。

Wǒ yàoshì bù huíguó, wǒ jiù gēn nǐmen yìqǐ qù wán.

If I do not go back to my country, I will go out with you.

3 要是我有空，我就跟朋友一起去KTV唱歌。

Yàoshì wǒ yǒu kòng, wǒ jiù gēn péngyǒu yìqǐ qù KTV chànggē.

If I am free, I will go sing with friends at a KTV.

 

Structures 要是 is a conjunction, which can be placed before or after the subject of the first clause. In the second clause, 就 is an adverb and is placed at the very beginning of the predicate.

1 你要是星期日有空，你就跟我去旅行吧！

Nǐ yàoshì xīngqírì yǒu kòng, nǐ jiù gēn wǒ qù lǚxíng ba!

If you are free on Sunday, go with me on a trip.

2 要是下個月不忙，她就回國。

Yàoshì xià ge yuè bù máng, tā jiù huíguó.

If she is not busy next month, she will return to her country.

3 你要是沒空，我們就不要去逛夜市。

Nǐ yàoshì méi kòng, wǒmen jiù bú yào qù guàng yèshì.

If you are not free, we will not go to the night market.
