無所謂, wúsuǒwèi, (Vs), does not matter

 

Function 無所謂, of classical Chinese, is now lexicalized into a state verb, meaning ‘does not matter’, ‘of no consequence’ or ‘I do not much care’, as far as the speaker or the subject is concerned.

1 候選人是什麼背景我無所謂,只要他有能力而且真的關心人民就好了。

Hòuxuǎn rén shì shénme bèijǐng wǒ wúsuǒwèi, zhǐyào tā yǒu nénglì érqiě zhēn de guānxīn rénmín jiù hǎo le.

I don’t care what background each candidate has. As long as they are capable and genuinely care about people’s well-being, that will be good enough.

2 總統的外表好不好看無所謂。能實現承諾最重要。

Zǒngtǒng de wàibiǎo hǎo bù hǎokàn wúsuǒwèi. Néng shíxiàn chéngnuò zuì zhòngyào.

It doesn’t matter whether or not the president looks good. It matters that he can make good on his promises.

3 這件事他要怎麼做我無所謂,只要他盡到自己的責任就好了。

Zhè jiàn shì tā yào zěnme zuò wǒ wúsuǒwèi, zhǐyào tā jìndào zìjǐ de zérèn jiù hǎo le.

It doesn’t matter how he gets it done, as long as he fulfills his responsibility to the best of his abilities.

4 她認為畢業以後能找到自己喜歡的工作就好了。薪資多少無所謂。

Tā rènwéi bìyè yǐhòu néng zhǎodào zìjǐ xǐhuān de gōngzuò jiù hǎo le. Xīnzī duōshǎo wúsuǒwèi.

She thinks that being able to find a fulfilling job after graduation is good enough, regardless of pay.

 

Usage As the sentence of this structure means it does not matter one way or another, the portion before or after (less often) contains a question, e.g., 什麼(1), 好不好(2), 怎麼(3) and 多少(4).
