Pronouns Interrogative in Non-committal Stance (2)

 

Function When interrogative pronouns (e.g., 什麼shénme, 多少duōshǎo, 幾jǐ, 哪裡nǎlǐ, 什麼地方shénme dìfāng, 誰shéi, 什麼時候shénme shíhòu) occur in a declarative sentence, the sentence indicates a non-committal attitude on the part of the speaker who is avoiding giving a clear answer. Non-committal statements are always in the negative.

1 我沒有多少錢。

Wǒ méi yǒu duōshǎo qián.

I don’t really have all that much money.

2 她沒有幾個朋友。

Tā méi yǒu jǐ ge péngyǒu.

She doesn’t really have all that many friends.

3 你的感冒沒有什麼關係。

Nǐ de gǎnmào méi yǒu shénme guānxi.

Your cold really isn’t all that serious.

4 我沒去哪裡。

Wǒ méi qù nǎlǐ.

I didn’t really go anywhere.

5 我不想買什麼。

Wǒ bù xiǎng mǎi shénme.

I’m not buying things.

6 我昨天沒給誰打過電話。

Wǒ zuótiān méi gěi shéi dǎguò diànhuà.

I did not phone anyone yesterday.
