Function In this pattern, 寧可 presents what the subject is willing to put up with, so that something more important could be accomplished.

1 父母寧可自己辛苦一點，也要讓孩子快樂。

Fùmǔ níngkě zìjǐ xīnkǔ yìdiǎn, yě yào ràng háizi kuàilè.

Parents would rather work a little harder, in order that their kids can be happy.

2 小農寧可收成少，也要種出安全、健康的食材。

Xiǎonóng níngkě shōuchéng shǎo, yě yào zhòngchū ānquán, jiànkāng de shícái.

Small farmers would rather the harvest be small, as long as they can raise safe and healthy food.

3 她寧可薪水少，也要做自己有興趣的工作。

Tā níngkě xīnshuǐ shǎo, yě yào zuò zìjǐ yǒu xìngqù de gōngzuò.

She would rather receive less money, if it means doing a job that she’s interested in.

4 表哥寧可不睡覺，也要把報告寫完。

Biǎogē níngkě bú shuìjiào, yě yào bǎ bàogào xiěwán.

My cousin would rather not sleep, so that he can finish writing his report.

5 美美寧可餐餐吃麵包，也要省錢準備旅行。

Měiměi níngkě cāncān chī miànbāo, yě yào shěng qián zhǔnbèi lǚxíng.

Meimei would rather eat bread for every meal, so that she can save some money for her trip.
