▎難免, nánmiǎn, (Adv), inevitably, it is only natural that
Function 難免 is an adverb, indicating that a situation is inevitable, that it cannot be helped or avoided.
1 很多學生好不容易考上了大學,難免想玩個夠,不想念書。
Hěn duō xuéshēng hǎobù róngyì kǎoshàngle dàxué, nánmiǎn xiǎng wán ge gòu, bù xiǎng niànshū.
Lots of students work extremely hard to get into university. Once they do, it’s unavoidable that they’ll want to let loose instead of studying.
2 有時候媒體的報導難免會有問題,所以大家要想一想,不能完全相信。
Yǒu shíhòu méitǐ de bàodǎo nánmiǎn huì yǒu wèntí, suǒyǐ dàjiā yào xiǎng yì xiǎng, bù néng wánquán xiāngxìn.
Errors in media reports are not always avoidable, so we ought to be discerning and not believe everything we hear.
3 張先生夫婦都失業了,難免會讓人擔心他們的未來。
Zhāng xiānshēng fūfù dōu shīyè le, nánmiǎn huì ràng rén dānxīn tāmen de wèilái.
Mr. Zhang and his wife both lost their jobs. That people are concerned for their future is inevitable.
4 年輕的一代已沒有重男輕女的觀念了,但老一輩的人難免還有這種想法。
Niánqīng de yí dài yǐ méi yǒu zhòngnán qīngnǚ de guānniàn le, dàn lǎoyíbèi de rén nánmiǎn hái yǒu zhè zhǒng xiǎngfǎ.
The younger generation may not be gender-biased, but among the elderly this way of thinking is to be expected.
5 由於「少子化」的關係,有些高中難免也受到了影響。
Yóuyú ‘shǎozǐhuà’ de guānxi, yǒuxiē gāozhōng nánmiǎn yě shòudào le yǐngxiǎng.
It is inevitable that the declining birth rate impacts some high schools.
Usage 難免 is rather versatile syntactically, unlike most adverbs, e.g.,
1 剛開始學中文時,難免會覺得很難。(pre-Vaux)
Gāng kāishǐ xué Zhōngwén shí, nánmiǎn huì juédé hěn nán.
When you first start studying Chinese, you’re going to find it difficult. That’s unavoidable.
2 剛開始學中文時,寫錯字是難免的。(as Predicate)
Gāng kāishǐ xué Zhōngwén shí, xiěcuò zì shì nánmiǎn de.
When you first start studying Chinese, it’s inevitable that you write characters incorrectly.
3 雖然他的脾氣好,但對這件事也難免(會)生氣。(post-PP)
Suīrán tā de píqì hǎo, dàn duì zhè jiàn shì yě nánmiǎn (huì) shēngqì.
He has a good temper. That said, he’s bound to get angry about this.
