▎既然 A 就 B, (jìrán (Conj) A jiù (Adv) B), Concession, since A then B

 

Function This pattern presents the speaker’s acceptance of the circumstances and her subsequent plans.

1 既然天氣這麼不穩定，我們就別去海邊了吧。

Jìrán tiānqì zhème bù wěndìng, wǒmen jiù bié qù hǎibiān le ba.

Since the weather is so unpredictable, let’s not go to the seaside.

2 既然網路塞車，那就先去運動，晚一點再上網。

Jìrán wǎnglù sāichē, nà jiù xiān qù yùndòng, wǎn yìdiǎn zài shàngwǎng.

Since the internet is congested, let’s go exercise first and go online later.

3 既然刷 Visa 卡，就可以再打九五折，當然要刷 Visa 卡。

Jìrán shuā Visa kǎ, jiù kěyǐ zài dǎ jiǔwǔ zhé, dāngrán yào shuā Visa kǎ.

Since I can get 5% off if I use a Visa Card, then, of course, I’ll use my Visa Card.

4 既然吃素對保護地球環境有幫助，以後我們就常吃素食。

Jìrán chī sù duì bǎohù dìqiú huánjìng yǒu bāngzhù, yǐhòu wǒmen jiù cháng chī sùshí.

Since eating vegetarian food helps protect the earth’s environment, we should eat vegetarian food more often.

5 既然你整天都會待在這裡，我就先去一趟銀行，再回來找你。

Jìrán nǐ zhěngtiān dōu huì dāi zài zhèlǐ, wǒ jiù xiān qù yí tàng yínháng, zài huílái zhǎo nǐ.

Since you’ll be here all day, I’ll go to the bank and come back later.

 

Usage Like all conjunctions, 既然 can be placed before or after the subject. E.g., 既然你不去，我就不去了。～你既然不去，我就不去了。Jìrán nǐ bú qù, wǒ jiù bú qù le. ~ Nǐ jìrán bú qù, wǒ jiù bú qù le. ‘since you’re not going, I’m not going either.’
