▎Complement of Intensification in Comparison Structures (1)

 

Function Intensifiers can be presented either as a pre-verbal adverbial, or as post-verbal complement. The latter can include 一點yìdiǎn, 得多de duō, and 多了duōle, which occur in high frequency.

1 他的房間比我的大一點。

Tā de fángjiān bǐ wǒ de dà yìdiǎn.

His room is just a little bigger than mine.

2 捷運站比公車站遠得多。

Jiéyùn zhàn bǐ gōngchē zhàn yuǎn de duō.

The MRT station is much farther away than the bus stop.

3 我覺得晚上比早上舒服多了。

Wǒ juéde wǎnshàng bǐ zǎoshàng shūfú duō le.

I think evenings are a lot more comfortable than mornings.

Chūntiān qù lǚxíng shìbúshì bǐ xiàtiān shūfú de duō?

It is much more enjoyable (lit. comfortable) to travel in the spring than in the summer, isn’t it?

4 高鐵票比火車票貴多了嗎？

Gāotiě piào bǐ huǒchē piào guì duō le ma?

Are HSR tickets much more expensive than train tickets?

5 這家店賣的甜點是不是比別家賣的好吃多了？

Zhè jiā diàn mài de tiándiǎn shìbúshì bǐ bié jiā mài de hǎochī duō le?

This shop’s desserts are tastier than at others’ shops, aren’t they?

 

Usage Unless reduplicated, 一點yìdiǎn does not occur pre-verbally. 多duō occurs either pre- or post-verbally. 多了duō le is always a complement.
