Function The pattern 不得不 is used when one is engaged in doing something reluctantly, as a last resort. There are not other options.

1 我不喜歡吃魚，但是為了讓傷口恢復得比較快，不得不喝點魚湯。

Wǒ bù xǐhuān chī yú, dànshì wèile ràng shāngkǒu huīfù de bǐjiào kuài, bùdébù hē diǎn yú tāng.

I don’t like fish, but if I want to heal my wound quicker I have no choice but to drink some fish soup.

2 因為小明去參加畢業旅行，媽媽不得不幫他照顧寵物。

Yīnwèi Xiǎomíng qù cānjiā bìyè lǚxíng, māma bùdébù bāng tā zhàogù chǒngwù.

Because Xiaoming went on a graduation trip, his mom has no choice but to take care of his pet for him.

3 現代人的飲食習慣改變了，很多傳統小吃店不得不改賣年輕人喜歡的食物。

Xiàndài rén de yǐnshí xíguàn gǎibiàn le, hěn duō chuántǒng xiǎochī diàn bùdébù gǎi mài niánqīng rén xǐhuān de shíwù.

The dietary habits of people today have changed. Many traditional eateries have had to change and sell foods that young people like.

Tā de tuǐ shòushāng le, bùdébù fàngqì zhè chǎng bǐsài.
