Do you know how many different kinds of animals there are in the world? There are so many different kinds of animals in the world that we cannot count them all.

你知道世界上有多少不同種類的動物嗎?世界上不同種類的動物多得我們數不完。

We know the names of some animals, don’t we? We know the names of some animals people like to look after as pets. Those are animals like dogs, cats, fish, rabbits and parrots.

我們知道一些動物的名稱,是嗎?人們喜歡把一些動物當作寵物照顧,我們知道它們的名稱。那些動物有狗、貓、魚、兔子和鸚鵡。

We know the names of some farm animals, too. Those are animals like cows, chickens and ducks.

我們也知道一些農場動物的名稱。那些動物有牛、雞和鴨。

We also know the names of some kinds of wild animals like tigers, snakes, rats, monkeys and elephants. Sometimes, we can see those animals in a zoo. We have to be careful when we are near wild animals because some of them can be dangerous.

我們還知道一些野生動物的名稱,比如老虎、蛇、老鼠、猴子和大象。有時候,我們能在動物園看到那些動物。當我們靠近野生動物時我們得小心,因為它們有些很危險。

In this book, we will learn about many of the different kinds of animals. We cannot learn about all the animals in the world – there are too many of them. But we can learn about some of them.

We will study what the different animals like to eat. We will learn where in the world the different animals live and which places they like to go. We will also learn how many young the different animals have and how long they live. We will learn about which animals are dangerous and which ones are not.

We are going to study animals with our friends – Lee, Pat and Tom. Lee, Pat and Tom are in their classroom now. They are waiting for their teacher. Pat is sitting in her place near the front of the classroom. Lee is sitting in his place next to his friend, Tom.

And I want to learn about rats, too.

Tom

Rats?

Lee

Yes. I want to learn everything about rats. I want to learn what they eat, the places they go to, how long they live – everything!

Tom

Why are you so interested in rats? Nobody likes rats!

Lee

Well I do. Out of all the animals in the world, I think rats are the most interesting – rats and snakes.

Tom

Snakes too?

Lee

Yes. I like to talk to my sister about rats and snakes.

Tom

Why?

Lee

Because she doesn’t like them, and she really doesn’t like it when I talk about them.

Tom

Why not?

Lee

Because she doesn’t like dangerous or dirty animals.

Tom

You’re not very nice to your sister, are you?

Lee

No, I’m not. I’m not nice to her because she’s not nice to me.

你想學習哪些動物呢,湯姆?

湯姆

我想學習危險的動物,比如老虎和蛇。

我也是。和農場動物或寵物相比,我對野生動物更感興趣。

湯姆

是啊。野生動物更有趣,不是嗎?
