āi, Shànghǎi de fángjià zhēnshì yuèláiyuègāo le, kě jiào wǒmen píngmín bǎixìng zěnme huó. yǒushí xiǎngxiang zìjǐ fèndòu sānshí nián hái bùyīdìng mǎideqǐ fáng, jiù juéde hěn dīluò.

Oh, housing prices in Shanghai are getting higher all the time. How can common folks like us go on living? Sometimes, I think that even if I worked like a dog for thirty years, I might not be able to afford a house. I get really down in the dumps.

wǒ tīngshuō yǒuxiē bàofāhù, qiánduànshíjiān dàsì chǎofáng, jiāng Shànghǎi de fángjià chǎo de hěn gāo, shì zhēnde ma?

I hear there are some nouveaux riches who were doing large-scale real estate speculation recently. They're making Shanghai's housing prices really high. Is that true?

hǎoxiàng yǒu guo zhèzhǒng shuōfa. zhēn bù zhīdào nàxiē bàofāhù yǒuxiē shénme mìjué, néng yīyèjiān bàofù, hěn duō rén bìng méiyǒu hěn gāo de xuéwèn, shuō nántīng diǎn hái hěn rustic bù shàng táimiàn, kěshì yǒuqián què shì bùzhēng de shìshí.

It seems like people have said that. I don't know what kind of secret tricks those newly rich have. They can get rich overnight. A lot of them aren't very well-educated. Not to put too fine a point on it, they're so vulgar that they wouldn't normally be able to make it. But it's an uncontested fact that they have money.

āi, zhèxiē bàofāhù zěnme zhème bàdào ne, yǒuqián yě méi shénme liǎobuqǐ yā. wǒ yìnxiàng zhōng de bàofāhù, jiùshì chúle yǒuqián, shénme yě méiyǒu de nàzhǒng. tāmen dàjiàn háozhái, dàsì huīhuò, què méiyǒu shénme jīngshén shízhì hé shēnghuó gédiào, jíbiàn yǒuqián, yě bèi chēngzuò" bùrùliú” de yīzú.

Ah, how can these nouveaux riches be so high-handed? There's nothing great about having money. It seems to me that these New Money guys are the kind who have nothing but their cash. They build McMansions, and throw their money around, but they don't have much in the way of spirit or lifestyle. Even though they have money, they're still called ''arrivistes."

jùshuō tóng shì yǒuqiánrén, bù zhāngyáng hé lěngjìng yǒulǐ de tōngcháng shì guìzú, ér tàidu cūlǔ yāoqiú shèn duō de tōngcháng shì bàofāhù. dāngrán yě bù shì juéduì de, yě yǒude bàofāhù zài bàofù zhīhòu réngrán bùwàng huíbào shèhuì, huì cānjiā hěn duō de císhàn shìyè hé shèhuì gōngyì huódòng, zhèxiērén yīnggāi zuòwéi fùrén de bǎngyàng.

People say that those who are calm, and not showy about their money, and have manners, are called aristocrats. But people who are crude and want a lot are called ''new money." Of course it's not absolute. There are also ''nouveaux riches" who remember to give back to society after they make it big. They take part in a lot of charitable activities for the benefit of society. These people should be models for the rich.

Ha ha, I noticed that too. Aristocrats at the so-called upper reaches of society are probably accustomed to an extravagant lifestyle and being noticed by others. So they don't get excited easily. Most nouveaux riches, on the other hand, never used to be rich. When they get rich overnight, they can't help showing off all over the place. They don't fit in with real rich people.

duì, dàgài zhè yěshì wèishénme" bàofāhù” chéngwéi le yī ge biǎnyìcí. qíshí hěn duō rén dōushì zài gǎigékāifàng hòu bèijǐnglíxiāng, dào yánhǎi de kāifàngchéngshì qù" táojīn”, xìngyùn de zhìfù de. tāmen de jīnglì zhōng yě huì yǒu kǎnkě hé xīnláo, kěshì dào hòulái bàofāhù què chéngwéi le bùláoérhuò de dàimíngcí. yěxǔ shì tāmen fùyǒu zhīhòu de zhuǎnbiàn shízài tàidà, suǒyǐ cái bù bèi shìrén suǒ jiēshòu ba.

Yeah. That's probably why ''new money" has become a pejorative word. Actually, a lot of people left their homes after Reform and Opening. They went to coastal cities to seek their fortune, and they got rich because of their luck. Their experiences were bumpy and full of back-breaking work. But later on, ''nouveau riche" became a word for those who reaped what they did not sew. Maybe they're not accepted by the rest of the world because they changed so much after getting rich.

wǒ yě zhème juéde. rúguǒ tāmen yǒu qián bù shì dàochù bǎikuò, érshì duō zhìlì yú gōngzhòngshìyè, xiāngxìn rénmen huì gǎiguān hěn duō.

I think so, too. If they didn't show off their money all over the place, and put more energy into public works, I'm sure people's opinions of them would change.

A:   是的。

shìde. yǒu qián hái gùyì bǎikuò huì ràng rén qiáobuqǐ, huì ràng rén zhìyí nǐ de wénhuà dǐyùn, juéde méi wénhuà méi zhīshi de rén cái huì zhème zuò, wúguài yǒu hěn duō bàofāhù huì bèi" guìzú” men bǐshì wéi bùdǒng lǐshù, bùshì zhēnzhèng de yǒuqiánrén, zhǐshì xìngyùn de bàofù le éryǐ.

Yeah. Showing off your money intentionally makes people look down at you. It'll make people suspect that you don't have much culture. They think that only people without culture or knowledge would act that way. It's no wonder that many of the nouveaux riches are looked down on by ''aristocrats" as not understanding etiquette. They say that nouveaux riches aren't ''real" rich people, they just got rich because of their luck.

qíshí nàxiē guìzú yě huì bèi rén shuō tài guòyú àomàn lěngdàn, tóngyàng yě shì hěn huīhuò de. zǒngguī dōu bùshì wǒmen píngcháng bǎixìng suǒ néng lǐjiě de shēnghuófāngshì.

Actually, people have said that those aristocrats are too proud and detached, and they waste their money just the same. In the end, neither one is a lifestyle that we common folks can understand.

duìyā, suǒyǐ xiànzài liúxíng de shì" zhīshi xīnguì”, zhè qún rén tōngcháng yǒu hěn gāo de xuélì hé hěn shēn de wénhuà bèijǐng, bìng tōngguò zìjǐ de nǔlì, xuéshí hé xīnqín láodòng lái huòqǔ cáifù, tāmen tōngcháng cōngming yòu yǒuhányǎng shì shèhuìfāzhǎn de zhōngjiān lìliang.

Right. So these days, ''newly rich intellectuals" are in fashion. This kind of person is often very well-educated and has a deep cultural background. They got rich through their own hard work, knowledge and industry. They're often smart and deep. They're the heart of social development.

That's right. That's exactly what we're striving for!
