V 著玩, V zhe wán, do something just for fun

 

Function This pattern presents a casual undertaking of something, not for any serious purposes.

1 有的事說著玩就好,不要太認真。

Yǒu de shì shuōzhe wán jiù hǎo, bú yào tài rènzhēn.

Some things are best spoken of in jest, not to be taken seriously.

2 我上線聊天只是聊著玩的,不會約網友出來玩的。

Wǒ shàngxiàn liáotiān zhǐshì liáozhe wán de, bú huì yuē wǎngyǒu chūlái wán de.

I chat online just for fun, but I never make arrangments to meet.

3 叔叔說他這次出來選舉是認真的,不是選著玩的。

Shúshu shuō tā zhè cì chūlái xuǎnjǔ shì rènzhēn de, búshì xuǎnzhe wán de.

My uncle is not kidding around. He said this time he is really running for office.

4 A:你家裡有很多台灣歷史的書,你對台灣歷史有興趣嗎?

Nǐ jiālǐ yǒu hěn duō Táiwān lìshǐ de shū, nǐ duì Táiwān lìshǐ yǒu xìngqù ma?

There are many books on Taiwan history in your house. Does Taiwan’s history interest you?

B:也不是特別有興趣,就看著玩。

Yě búshì tèbié yǒu xìngqù, jiù kànzhe wán.

Not particularly. I’m just reading for the fun of it.

5 A:你書法寫得那麼好,簡直可以去比賽了。

Nǐ shūfǎ xiě dé nàme hǎo, jiǎnzhí kěyǐ qù bǐsài le.

Your calligraphy is amazing. You should enter a contest.

B:我只是寫著玩的,沒辦法參加比賽。

Wǒ zhǐshì xiězhe wán de, méi bànfǎ cānjiā bǐsài.

I just do it for fun. I’m not competition material.
