▎一來 A，二來 B, (yìlái A, èrlái B), on the one hand A, and on the other B; firstly A, secondly B

 

Function This pattern offers two reasons or explanations for a statement already presented.

1 我不信任他，一來我們認識不久，二來聽說他會騙人。

Wǒ bú xìnrèn tā, yìlái wǒmen rènshì bù jiǔ, èrlái tīngshuō tā huì piàn rén.

I don’t trust him. First, we have not known each other for very long. Second, I've heard that he cheats.

2 我不跟你們到綠島去玩，一來我怕坐船，二來我不會游泳，去了沒意思。

Wǒ bù gēn nǐmen dào Lǜdǎo qù wán, yìlái wǒ pà zuò chuán, èrlái wǒ bú huì yóuyǒng, qùle méiyìsi.

I’m not going to go with you to Green Island. On the one hand, I’m afraid of boat rides. On the other, I can’t swim. It'll be boring if I go.

3 我最近吃素，一來天氣太熱，吃不下油膩的東西，二來吃青菜對健康比較好。

Wǒ zuìjìn chīsù, yìlái tiānqì tài rè, chībúxià yóunì de dōngxi, èrlái chī qīngcài duì jiànkāng bǐjiào hǎo.

I've been eating vegetarian food a lot lately. First of all, it’s been too hot out, I can’t handle oily food. Second, eating vegetables is better for you.

4 我們今年的收成不錯，一來天氣好，沒有颱風，二來我種的是新品種。

Wǒmen jīnnián de shōuchéng búcuò, yìlái tiānqì hǎo, méi yǒu táifēng, èrlái wǒ zhòng de shì xīn pǐnzhǒng.

Our harvest this year was pretty good. On the one hand, the weather was good--no typhoons. On the other, I planted a new strain of crops.

5 養寵物，一來讓我們不孤單，二來給我們很多快樂。所以現在養寵物的人越來越多。

Yǎng chǒngwù, yìlái ràng wǒmen bù gūdān, èrlái gěi wǒmen hěnduō kuàilè. Suǒyǐ xiànzài yǎng chǒngwù de rén yuèláiyuè duō.

Keeping pets, on the one hand, takes away loneliness, and on the other, brings us a lot of joy, so an increasing number of people are keeping pets.

 

Usage The usage of this pattern is the same as 一方面 A，一方面 B, but 一來A，二來 B can be used to offer more reasons. For example, 一來A，二來 B，三來 C. In addition, 一來 A，二來 B is more colloquial than 一方面 A，一方面 B.
