▎光 A 就 B, (guāng (Adv) A jiù (Adv) B), just A alone...

 

Function This pattern consists of 2 adverbs, meaning ‘even/just A alone exceeds common expectations’.

1 台灣的便利商店非常多。光我家外面那條街就有三家。

Táiwān de biànlì shāngdiàn fēicháng duō. Guāng wǒ jiā wàimiàn nà tiáo jiē jiù yǒu sān jiā.

There are tons of convenience stores in Taiwan.There are three on the street just outside my place alone.

2 他很愛吃甜點。光蛋糕一次就可以吃五個。

Tā hěn ài chī tiándiǎn. Guāng dàngāo yí cì jiù kěyǐ chī wǔ gè.

He loves sweets. Just speaking of cake, he can eat five slices in one sitting.

3 媽媽脾氣暴躁。光一件小小的事就能讓她生很大的氣。

Māma píqì bàozào. Guāng yí jiàn xiǎoxiǎo de shì jiù néng ràng tā shēng hěn dà de qì.

Mother’s temper is volatile; even a minor thing can cause her to erupt.

4 老人動作比較慢。光上下公車就要比較長的時間。旁邊的人應該幫幫他們。

Lǎorén dòngzuò bǐjiào màn. Guāng shàng xià gōngchē jiù yào bǐjiào cháng de shíjiān. Pángbiān de rén yīnggāi bāngbāng tāmen.

The elderly have to move slowly; just getting on and off the bus alone takes quite a bit of time. Those close by ought to help.

5 那家新開的餐廳，聽說很有名。昨天我們光等位子就等了一個半鐘頭。

Nà jiā xīn kāi de cāntīng, tīngshuō hěn yǒumíng. Zuótiān wǒmen guāng děng wèizi jiù děngle yí ge bàn zhōngtóu.

I hear that new restaurant is quite popular. We went yesterday, and waiting for a table alone took an hour and a half.
