Travelers, next up we'll go to a local Suzhou tea house and do some tea tasting while listening to some 'pingtan'. Does everyone know what 'pingtan' is?
B: 是一種說唱藝術。

It's a kind of speaking/singing performance art.
C: 是用方言唱的。
shì yòng fāngyán chàng de.
It's sung in a dialect.
A: 看來大家是有備而來啊。我再給大家簡單地介紹一下。評彈是一種古老的說唱藝術。起源於美麗的蘇州，是用最柔軟的蘇州話來唱的。有說有唱，還有彈。
kànlái dàjiā shì yǒubèi'érlái a. wǒ zài gěi dàjiā jiǎndān de jièshào yīxià. píngtán shì yīzhǒng gǔlǎo de shuōchàng yìshù. qǐyuán yú měilì de Sūzhōu, shì yòng zuì róuruǎn de Sūzhōuhuà lái chàng de. yǒu shuō yǒu chàng, háiyǒu tán.
It seems as though everyone came prepared. Let me give you all another simple introduction. 'Pingtan' is one kind of the ancient art of speaking and singing style story telling. It originated in our beautiful Suzhou and is sung in the softest of dialects, the Suzhou dialect. There's speaking and singing, and also stringed instruments.
D: 請聽《太湖美》！
qǐng tīng《 Tàihú měi》!

E: 哎，我看你聽得挺入迷的。他們唱的你都聽得懂嗎？
āi, wǒ kàn nǐ tīng de tǐng rùmí de. tāmen chàng de nǐ dōu tīngdedǒng ma?
Hey, you seem pretty lost in the music. Do you understand everything they're singing?
F: 聽得懂一部分。
tīngdedǒng yībùfēn.
I can understand a part of it.
E: 哦。我是北京來的。完全聽不懂，真的是對牛彈琴。
ò. wǒ shì Běijīng lái de. wánquán tīngbùdǒng, zhēnde shì duìniútánqín.
Oh, I come from Beijing. I don't understand any of it. It really is like the expression, 'playing music to a cow'.
F: 你們北京人經常聽京劇吧？
nǐmen Běijīng rén jīngcháng tīng Jīngjù ba?
Do Beijing people often listen to Beijing opera?
E: 現在只有老人愛聽那玩意兒。年輕人流行聽演唱會，玩音樂。
xiànzài zhǐyǒu lǎorén ài tīng nà wányìr. niánqīngrén liúxíng tīng yǎnchànghuì, wánr yīnyuè.
These days only old people like listening to that stuff. Young people are into going to concerts and playing music.
F: 京劇不是國粹嗎？
Jīngjù bùshì guócuì ma?
But isn't Beijing opera the quintessence of Chinese culture?
E: 國粹是不假。但沒以前那麼盛行了。以前那些有空有閒的人，就愛上戲院。流派也多，各家各派爭奇鬥豔，可有看頭了。
guócuì shì bù jiǎ. dàn méi yǐqián nàme shèngxíng le. yǐqián nàxiē yǒu kòng yǒu xián de rén, jiù ài shàng xìyuàn. liúpài yě duō, gèpài zhēngqídòuyàn, kě yǒu kàntou le.
It is the quintessence of Chinese culture, but it's just not as in vogue as it used to be. In the past, people with a lot of time for leisure loved going to the theater. There were also a lot of theater schools. Each and every school was in competition with the others to be the best, most glamorous school.
F: 我看過《梅蘭芳》那部電影，梅蘭芳都把京劇傳播到了國外。
wǒ kàn guò《 Méi Lánfāng》 nà bù diànyǐng, Méi Lánfāng dōu bǎ Jīngjù chuánbō dào le guówài.
I've seen that movie, 'Mei Lanfang'. Mei Lanfang even spread Beijing opera abroad.
E: 是啊，能在美國的百老匯演出，那是真有本事。
shì a, néng zài Měiguó de Bǎilǎohuì yǎnchū, nà shì zhēn yǒu běnshì.
That's right. He was able to perform on Broadway. Now that's talent.
F: 可惜我沒怎麼聽過，我們那裡人愛聽越劇。
kěxī wǒ méi zěnme tīng guo, wǒmen nàlǐ rén ài tīng Yuèjù.
It's a shame I haven't heard much Beijing opera. People from where I'm from love Shaoxing opera.
E: 越劇？那你應該是浙江人吧？我有個大學室友就是你們那兒的，是個越劇迷。我還學了句“天上掉下個林妹妹”。
Yuèjù? nà nǐ yīnggāi shì Zhèjiāngrén ba? wǒ yǒu gè dàxué shìyǒu jiùshì nǐmen nàr de, shì gè Yuèjù mí. wǒ hái xué le jù" tiānshàng diào xià ge Lín mèimei”.
Shaoxing opera? Then you're probably from Zhejiang, no? I had a college roommate who was from there; a Shaoxing opera fan. I even studied a few lines of, “From Heaven Fell a Sister Lin”
F: 你唱得不錯嘛！
nǐ chàng de bùcuò ma!
You sing quite well!
E: 哈哈，只會這一句。你們那邊的方言太難了。
hāhā, zhǐ huì zhè yī jù. nǐmen nàbiān de fāngyán tài nán le.
Hah-hah. I can only sing one line. Your people's dialect is too difficult.
F: 京劇是用北京話唱的吧？
Jīngjù shì yòng Běijīnghuà chàng de ba?
Beijing opera is sung in Beijing dialect, right?
E: 要看的，有些是，有些不是。京劇是一種融合了徽戲，崑曲，秦腔等很多地方戲的劇種。
yào kàn de, yǒuxiē shì, yǒuxiē bùshì. Jīngjù shì yīzhǒng rónghé le Huīxì, Kūnqǔ, Qínqiāng děng hěn duō dìfang xì de jùzhǒng.
It depends. Some is and some isn't. Beijing opera is a mix of Anhui, Kunqu, Shaanxi, and many other places' kinds of opera.
F: 集百家之長，難怪被稱之為國粹。
jí bǎi jiā zhī cháng, nánguài bèi chēngzhīwèi guócuì.
It's taken the best from so many different kinds. No wonder it's been called the quintessence of Chinese culture.
E: 哎，不過現在喜歡和了解的人已經越來越少了。跟許多的傳統文化和藝術一樣，面臨著傳承的問題。
āi, bùguò xiànzài xǐhuan hé liǎojiě de rén yǐjīng yuèláiyuè shǎo le. gēn xǔduō de chuántǒng wénhuà hé yìshù yīyàng, miànlín zhe chuánchéng de wèntí.
Ah, but these days, there are less and less people who like it and understand it. It's the same with many other traditional cultures and arts; what they're up against is a problem of inheritance.
F: 其實我覺得可以從內容方面入手，不要只侷限在歷史故事和古代小說，可以根據現代人的想法，把現代人的生活場景搬上舞臺。
qíshí wǒ juéde kěyǐ cóng nèiróng fāngmiàn rùshǒu, bù yào zhǐ júxiàn zài lìshǐ gùshi hé gǔdài xiǎoshuō, kěyǐ gēnjù xiàndài rén de xiǎngfǎ, bǎ xiàndài rén de shēnghuó chǎngjǐng bān shàng wǔtái.
Actually, I think it could start with the content. It doesn't have to be limited to history and ancient stories. It can be done using modern people's ideas, and take the setting of our modern day lives onto the stage.
E: 有道理。可以向有關部門建議一下。
