nà wǒ men lái tīng ting Zhōngwén bōkè de tóngshì Jiāojié, nǐ liùyī Er2tóng Jié de huíyì ō.

So let's listen to ChinesePod colleague Jiaojie's recollections about Children's Day on June First.

wǒ men liùyī Er2tóng Jié de shíhou yī bān huì yǒu wényì biǎoyǎn.

On Children's Day we would usually have artistic and literary performances.

o, suǒyǐ shì hěn xīngshīdòngzhòng de.

Oh, so a lot of people got involved.

B 對。

duì.

Yes.

jiùshì xuéxiào lǐ huì zǔzhī xiǎopéngyǒu chànggē tiàowǔ shénme de. duì ba?

So schools organize the kids and have them sing and dance, right?

jiùshì wǒmen yào xiān zài xuéxiào biǎoyǎn, ránhòu xuǎn chū bǐjiào hǎo de qù quánqū biǎoyǎn.

First, we'd have a performance in the school. Then we'd pick the best ones to go to the regional performance.

jiùshì hǎoduō xuéxiào zàiyīqǐ bǐsài.

So many schools competed together.

B 對。

duì.

Yes.

nà yālì huì hěn dà ma? huì hěn lèi ba?

So was there a lot of pressure? Did you feel exhausted?

nà huìr bù juéde lèi, jiùshì juéde mǎn kāixīn de.

At that time we don't feel really tired, just really happy.

Oh, maybe when you rehearse you don't need to go to class. That's something that students really enjoy.

duì, xiàwǔ wǒmen pái liànwán le jiù kěyǐ huíjiā le .

Yes, in the afternoon after we finished rehearsing we could just go home.

suǒyǐ nǐ shuō zhè ge liùyī Er2tóng Jié biǎoyǎn jiémù, hái yǒu zhèyàng qìngzhù ā, dàgài shì xiǎoxué de shíhou ba.

So you're saying that this Children's Day performance and these celebrations take place in elementary school, right?

duì. shì xiǎoxué de shíhou.

Right. They take place in elementary school.

suǒyǐ chàbuduō shì dào zhōngxué, jiùshì xiǎoxué bìyè, hǎoxiàng dàjiā jiù bùguò liùyījié le.

So it seems like more or less when you get to middle school, after graduating from elementary school, people don't celebrate Children's Day anymore.

chūzhōng yī niánjí jiù bù guò le.

When we got to the first year of middle school we stopped celebrating it.

nà chúle xuéxiào de zhè zhǒng qìngzhù, nǐmen fàngjià ma?

Now, other than these kinds of celebrations, do you get any vacation?

shàngwǔ biǎoyǎn, dàgài xiàwǔ jiù fàngjià le .

I guess you perform in the morning, and then you get the afternoon off.

nà jiālǐ huìbuhuì gěi nǐ mǎi xiē lǐwù a shénme, duō gěi yīxiē línghuāqián?

Would your family buy you any presents or give you some spending money or anything like that?

hǎoxiàng bù mǎi lǐwù, dànshì huì duōgěi wǒ yīdiǎn línghuāqián .

It doesn't seem like we got presents, but they would give you a little more spending money.

nǐ dōu zěnme yòng a?

How would you spend it?

wǒ jiù zìjǐ xiǎng mǎi shénme mǎi shénme. mǎi líng shí shénme......xuěgāo a.

I'd just spend it how I liked. I'd buy some snacks, stuff like ice cream.

xiànzài huíxiǎng qǐlái, juéde nà ge shíhou kuàilè ma? liùyī Er2tóng Jié.

Looking back on it now, do you think that was a happy time? I mean Children's Day.

ng4, hěn kuàilè.

Oh yes, very happy.

hái tǐng huáiniàn de o!

You're really thinking fondly of it!

B 對。

duì.

Yes.

So we just heard Jiaojie's recollections of Children's Day. It was really happy.

B 嗯。

ng4.

*sigh*

nà xiànzài ne, wǒmen yǒu yī wèi láizì Táiwān de tóngshì, Aric, tā yào gàosu wǒ men yīxià zài Táiwān shì zěnme qìngzhù Er2tóng Jié de. Aric, zài Táiwān, hǎoxiàng Er2tóng Jié de rìqī bù shì liùyuè yī hào , duìba?

Now, we have a colleague from Taiwan, Aric. He wants to tell us a bit about how Children's Day is celebrated in Taiwan. Aric, it seems like in Taiwan, Children's Day is not June First, right?

bù shì. zài Táiwān de Er2tóng Jié shì sìyuè sì rì .

No, it's not. In Taiwan, Children's Day is April Fourth.

sìyuè sìhào? āi, nà qiánmian wǒ wèn nǐ a, yìnxiàng zuìshēn de Er2tóng Jié nǐ men shì zěnme guò de?

April Fourth? Oh, now first of all, I'd like to ask you, how did you celebrate the Children's Day that left the biggest impression?

zài wǒ men nàge niándài ba, xiǎoxué de shíhou cái yǒuguò ma.

Back in that era, we'd barely gotten into elementary school. Generally, we would get some cookies. Or maybe pencils and erasers, stuff like that. Other than that stuff, we didn't have really big activities to celebrate. I guess that's basically the only experience we had as children.

A 嗯。

ng4.

So the fun was in the fact that the school would give you some little gifts.

tōngcháng dehuà wǒ men jiù huì ná dào yīxiē bǐnggān a, huòshì yīxiē qiānbǐ xiàngcā a zhè zhǒng dōngxi. chúle zhè zhīwài wǒmen qíshí méiyǒu shuō yǒu hěn dà de qìngzhùhuódòng. zhè dàgài jiùshì wéiyī de zhè ge...zhè zhǒng dāng értóng de gǎnshòu ba.

Yes, yes.

lèqù jiùshì xuéxiào sòng nǐ yīxiē xiǎo lǐwù.

Now earlier we had another colleague mention that the school would organize arts and literary performances, with singing and dancing. Now in your day, which was a little bit earlier, twenty or thirty years ago, there still weren't those kind of things, right?

C 對對對。

duì duì duì.

Right. In those days, people were still very conservative.

nà qiánmian yīnwèi wǒmen lìngwài de tóngshì, zài xuéxiào dōuhuì shénme zǔzhī wényì biǎoyǎn, chànggē tiàowǔ, nǐ shuō nàge nǐ de niándài, jiùshì bǐjiào zǎo yīdiǎn, èr sānshí niánqián hái méiyǒu, shì ba?

Oh, that's true.

duì, zài nàgeniándài , rénmen hái shì hěn bǎoshǒu ma.

So basically we didn't have any activities like they have today.

o, zhè dàoshì.

Now for Children's Festival, do you give your kid any gifts?

suǒyǐ jīběnshang méiyǒu xiàng xiànzài nà me duō huódòng.

Not really. Because my child grew up abroad, and doesn't really have any concept of Children's Day.

nà Er2tóng Jié dehuà, xiànzài nǐ huìbuhuì sòng nǐ háizi yīxiē lǐwù ne?

Doesn't really have that concept. Right. Actually, I think Children's Day is a lot of fun. Many kids on the mainland all call it International Children's Day, and they think everyone celebrates it. But when they grow up they find out that it actually isn't so. A lot of places don't celebrate it.

yīnggāi bùhuì ba. yīnwèi wǒ de érzi dōu zài guówài zhǎngdà, duì Er2tóng Jié méishénme gàiniàn.

Right.

méi zhè ge gàiniàn. duì. qíshí wǒ juéde Er2tóng Jié tǐng hǎowán de. hǎoduō zài dàlù de xiǎopéngyǒu dōu shuō tā shì guójì Er2tóng Jié, juéde quánshìjiè de rén dōuhuì qìngzhù ma! jiéguǒ zhǎngdà yǐhòu fāxiàn hǎoxiàng bù shì zhèyàng de. hěn duō dìfang de rén dōu bù qìngzhù.

So thanks, Aric, for telling us about your experiences during Children's Day.

C 對。

duì.

So now, our colleague Little He, who is possibly the youngest person here at ChinesePod, born in 1987, but now he's an adult, so we're not suspected of using child labor. So Little He, in your day, celebrating Children's Day was probably a bit different.

nà xièxie Aric gàosu wǒ men nǐ xiǎo shíhou de Er2tóng Jié jīnglì.

That's right.

nà xiànzài zhè wèi tóngshì Xiǎo Hè, tā shì wǒ men zhěnggè Zhōngwén bōkè lǐmiàn niánjì kěnéng zuìxiǎo de, bā qī nián chūshēng, hái hǎo nǐ chéngnián le, wǒmen méiyǒu shèxián zhāoyòng tóng gōng . nà XiǎoHè, nǐ nàge niándài kěnéng guò liùyī Er2tóng Jié yòu bù tàiyíyàng le.

How would you celebrate it?

D 對的。

duì de.

We got vacation for Children's Day.

nǐmen shì zěnme guò de ya?

You got vacation. It gets simpler all the time.

wǒmen liùyī Er2tóng Jié jiùshì fàngjià.

Because over there, it was like an elementary school, and in the countryside you just get vacation. There were no activities.

jiùshì fàngjià a. yuèláiyuè jiǎndān le.

So you grew up in Lian Yun Gang, a pretty small place in Jiangsu province. So maybe your experience of Children's Day there was a little different from in the cities.

yīnwèi wǒmen nàbian, xiàng xiǎoxuéxiào ma, érqiě xiāngxià jiùshì fàngjià, méiyǒu rènhé de huódòng.

In the cities (because we could see them on the news), in the cities at that time they did celebrate Children's Festival on June First.

Yes, and it was very grand.

xiàng chéngshì dehuà, yīnwèi wǒmen zài xīnwén lǐmiàn kěyǐ kàndào, xiàng chéngshì dehuà nàshíhòu liùyī Er2tóng Jié tāmen hái shì yǒuguò de.

But little countryside elementary schools like ours wouldn't have that kind of activity.

duì, hái shì tǐng lóngzhòng de.

So were you envious?

xiàng wǒmen zhèzhǒng xiāngxià de xiǎoxué tā bùhuì yǒu zhè zhǒng huódòng de.

Not really, because we didn't have it, so getting a vacation was OK.

nà nǐ huìbuhuì hěn xiànmù ne?

That's true. Little kids are happy as long as they don't have to go to class.

yěbùhuì hěn xiànmù a, yīnwèi méiyǒu, fàngjià yě kěyǐ a.

Right.

zhè dàoshì a. xiǎo háizi zhǐyào bù shàngkè jiù hěn kāixīn le .

So basically on Children's Festival you would go out with your buddies and run wild and play.

D 對呀。

duìya.

Yes. It was OK as long as we got vacation. You could do whatever you liked when you were on vacation.

suǒyǐ liùyī Er2tóng Jié de shíhou nǐmen jīběnshang jiùshì hé xiǎo huǒbàn chūqù, suíbiàn yě, suíbiàn wán.

So your experience was special, you had a very independent vacation for Children's Day.

duì. zhǐyào fàngjià jiù kěyǐ. fàngjià fǎnzhèng suíbiàn wǒmen wán le .

Right on.

suǒyǐ nǐ de jīnglì yě shì hěn tèbié de, jiùshì dōu shì hěn zìyóu de fàngjià de Er2tóng Jié.

Would your mom and dad maybe give you some spending money?

D 對對對。

duì duì duì.

Nope. Maybe they didn't know about Children's Festival. Because in the countryside, these parents were from a different generation.

bàbamāma huìbuhuì shénme duō gěi yīxiē línghuāqián?

Ah, so their awareness was not the same.

méiyǒu. tāmen kěnéng hái bù zhīdào yǒu zhè ge liùyī Er2tóng Jié. yīnwèi xiāngxià dehuà, kěnéng xiàng zhèzhǒng fùmǔ dehuà, tāmen kěnéng yòu shì lìngwài yīge niándài de rén le.

Right.

duì, yìshí yòu bù tài yíyàng.

So in the future your child may have still another kind of Children's Day experience.

D 對對對。

duìduìduì.

Very true.

Oh, three generations in one family all with different Children's Festivals. Great. Thanks, Little He.

D 對對對。

duì duì duì.

wa, yī jiā sāndài rén bùtóng de Er2tóngJié. hǎo, xièxie Xiǎo Hè.
