A 今年學校搞的中外學生對比測評真不錯。雖然有片面性,但還是總結出很多根本性差異。

This year, the schools' comparative rating of Chinese and foreign students is really good. Although it's a bit one-sided, it really summarizes a lot of essential differences.
B 是啊。首先他們對待學習的態度就不一樣。中國學生更多地把學習看作任務。從小接受應試教育,題海戰術,求知慾、自主性和興趣都被磨滅了。

Yeah. First, their attitudes toward studying are different. Chinese students see studying as more of a responsibility. From the time they are very young, they get testing-focused education based on a strategy of learning tons of possible questions. Their thirst for knowledge, autonomy and pleasure in learning are ground out.
A 沒錯,所以好多孩子進了大學就好像完成了人生最重要的任務,對待學習都比較被動、好像交差。是為老師、父母學,不是為自己。有的乾脆就不把學習當回事。

That's true. So when they get into university, a lot of kids feel like they've completed the most important duty of their life, and so their attitude toward their studies is passive, with the goal of reporting to the boss afterward. They do it for their teachers and parents, not for themselves. Some don't take their studies seriously at all.
B 外國學生,特別是西方學生就不一樣了。給我印象最深的是他們對於學習的熱情。好奇心特別強,問的最多的就是“為什麼?”和“為什麼不能這樣?”。

Foreign students, especially Western students, are different. The thing that makes the deepest impression on me is their enthusiasm for learning. They're extremely curious, and more than anything they ask ``why?" and ``why can't it be this way?"
A 我也發現了。這和他們從小的教育環境有關,還有就是他們很多人是因為興趣選專業。喜歡的東西,當然就能很投入地學。我們中國學生很多是以考分、或者工作前景來做選擇的。上課時最常問的問題是“這個會考到嗎?”。

I've also noticed that. This has to do with their education environment, starting from when they are very young. And many of them choose their major because they are interested in it. Of course you're able to put a lot into studying something you enjoy. Many Chinese students make their choice based on their test scores or job prospects. In class, the question they ask the most is ``Will this be on the test?"
B 哈哈,我倒發現這是全世界學生的通病。好幾個外國孩子也問過我同樣的問題。哎,你講課的時候,發現課堂表現有什麼不一樣?

Ha ha, actually I think all students the world over share that disease. Many foreign kids have asked me the same question.
A 國外學生特別愛討論和質疑。我問一個問題,他們很快就發表自己的觀點,有時課堂都吵翻了天。剛開始教他們的時候還真有點不習慣。中國孩子就安靜多了,很多時候老師使勁問也問不出。

Oh, when you're teaching, what differences have you noticed in classroom performance?
B 嗯,我們的孩子從小的觀念就是要認真聽講,老師問的問題也都是黑白分明、在書本上找得到正確答案的。所以中國學生的思維不夠活躍,也缺乏獨立性。

Foreign students really love to discuss and make challenges. As soon as I ask a question, they immediately share their ideas. Sometimes the class gets extremely noisy. When I first started teaching I was really not used to that. Chinese kids are much quieter. Often, even when the teacher tries hard she can't get them to answer a question.
A 你說到獨立,我覺得這是兩邊學生最大的差異。外國孩子不論是思想、做事都比較有自己的主見、而且會想辦法解決問題。中國孩子就顯得一板一眼,很被動。他們能把一個單獨的任務完成得很好,但是缺乏全局觀和分析能力。
nǐ shuōdào dúlì, wǒ juéde zhè shì liǎng biān xuésheng zuìdà de chāyì. wàiguó háizi bùlùn shì sīxiǎng, zuòshì dōu bǐjiào yǒu zìjǐ de zhǔjiàn, érqiě huì xiǎng bànfǎ jiějué wèntí. Zhōngguó háizi jiù xiǎnde yībǎnyīyǎn, hěn bèidòng. tāmen néng bǎ yī ge dāndú de rènwù wánchéng de hěn hǎo, dànshì quēfá quánjúguān hé fēnxī nénglì.
Ah, from a young age our kids are told to diligently listen to their lessons. The questions the teacher asks are all black and white, and you can find the correct answer in the book. So Chinese kids' thinking is not lively enough, and lacks independence.
B 對,我上課的時候就體會到外國學生總會試圖去理解,他們會問“我們為什麼要做這件事?”,“它能解決什麼問題?”;中國孩子的態度就是老師讓我做,我就做。雖然也會很認真,但是不會去探究背後的道理。

You mentioned independence. I think that's the biggest difference between the two types of students. Not only do foreign kids have their own views about thinking and working, they can also think of ways to solve problems. Chinese kids do things much more passively, and by-the-book. They can do a single task very well, but they lack perspective and analytical ability.

Right. When I teach, I experience this. Foreign students are always trying to understand-- they ask ``Why do we need to do this?" and ``What problem does this solve?" Chinese kids' attitude is that if the teacher tells me to do something, I will. Although they can be very diligent, they won't go and explore the reasons behind anything.
B 我們前面說中國孩子是應試教育的產物,所以都是考試能手。他們聽課、做功課、和複習都是為考試而準備。國外孩子就不太一樣了,注重享受學習的過程。我就有些學生平時發言特別積極,很有自己的觀點,但是作業和考試都不怎麼樣。
wǒmen qiánmian shuō Zhōngguó háizi shì yìngshìjiàoyù de chǎnwù, suǒyǐ dōu shì kǎoshì néngshǒu. tāmen tīngkè , zuò gōngkè, hé fùxí dōu shì wèi kǎoshì ér zhǔnbèi. guówài háizi jiù bù tài yíyàng le, zhùzhòng xiǎngshòu xuéxí de guòchéng. wǒ jiù yǒuxiē xuésheng píng shí fāyán tèbié jījí, hěnyǒu zìjǐ de guāndiǎn, dànshì zuòyè hé kǎoshì dōu bù zěnmeyàng.
They really are very different. But looking their test scores don't really reflect the differences between Chinese and foreign students' attitudes toward studying and performance in the classroom.
A 是啊,這也和我們考題的設置有些關係,仍然很平面地測試學生的能力。
shì ā, zhè yě hé wǒmen kǎotí de shèzhì yǒuxiē guānxi, réngrán hěn píngmiàn de cèshì xuésheng de nénglì.
We already said that Chinese students are the products of testing-focused education. Of course they do well on tests. They listen to lectures, do their homework and review all for the sake of the tests. Foreign kids' attitudes are different. They pay attention to and enjoy the process of learning. I have a few students who very actively make comments and have lots of their own ideas, but whose tests and homework are not that great.
B 不光是考試,我們老師也要改一改思路了。不能光喊要推行素質教育,還應該真正地去落實。
bùguāng shì kǎoshì, wǒmen lǎoshī yě yào gǎi yī gǎi sīlù le. bùnéng guāng hǎn yào tuīxíng sùzhìjiàoyù, hái yīnggāi zhēnzhèng de qù luòshí.
That's true. This also has to do with our test question design. They still flatly assess the students' ability.
