The topic I’d like to discuss today is “Is China Scary?” It just so happens that we have Aaron, an American exchange student here. I hope you can share some of your own thoughts. First of all, let me ask: what American movies have portrayed China recently?
B: 《功夫熊貓》，《蝙蝠俠》。
Gōngfū xióngmāo》,《 Biānfúxiá》.
“Kung Fu Panda,” “Batman.”
C: 《木乃伊3》裡也講到過中國。
《 Mùnǎiyī sān》 li yě jiǎng dào guò Zhōngguó.
“The Mummy III—Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” also talked about China.
A: 嗯，相信大家都看過這些片子。確實，中國已經成為了美國媒體的熱點題材。但是很多電影都是負面地反映中國。

Hmm…I’m sure everyone’s seen these movies. There’s no doubt that China has already become a hot topic in the American media. But a lot of movies portray China in a negative light.
C: 阿龍，美國人到底怕中國什麼呀？
A1lóng, Měiguórén dàodǐ pà Zhōngguó shénme yā?
Aaron, what do Americans fear about China?
B: 怕中國公司收購美國公司、怕中國製造”搶了美國人的飯碗，還有中國的軍力什麼的。當然這是一些媒體誇大事實的結果。
pà Zhōngguó gōngsī shōugòu Měiguó gōngsī、 pà Zhōngguó zhìzào” qiǎng le Měiguórén de fànwǎn, hái yǒu Zhōngguó de jūnlì shénme de. dāngrán zhè shì yīxiē méitǐ kuādà shìshí de jiéguǒ.
They’re afraid that Chinese companies will buy American companies. They’re afraid that “Made in China” will steal Americans’ livelihood. And then there’s stuff like the Chinese military. Of course, this is the result of the media exaggerating reality.
C: 那你是說美國老百姓被媒體誤導，所以很怕中國？媒體為什麼要這樣啊？
nà nǐ shì shuō Měiguó lǎobǎixìng bèi méitǐ wùdǎo, suǒyǐ hěn pà Zhōngguó? méitǐ wèishénme yào zhèyàng a?
Then you’re saying that ordinary Americans have been misled by the media? And that’s the reason they’re afraid of China? Why does the media have to do this?
B: 媒體需要戲劇性的效果，所以會誇大事實。
méitǐ xūyào xìjùxìng de xiàoguǒ, suǒyǐ huì kuādà shìshí.
The media needs drama, so they exaggerate.
A: 那阿龍你覺得中國可怕嗎？
nà A1lóng nǐ juéde Zhōngguó kěpà ma?
Well, then, Aaron—do you think China is scary?
B: 當然不可怕。我在這兒生活了那麼多年，已經很習慣了。
dāngrán bù kěpà. wǒ zài zhèr shēnghuó le nàme duō nián, yǐjīng hěn xíguàn le.
Of course not. I’ve lived here for so many years. I’m already used to it.
C: 阿龍，你回去告訴他們，中國可好玩了，有吃不完的美食！而且中國人很友好，跟美國人沒什麼差別。你們看的電影我們也看，你們吃的快餐我們也吃。
A1lóng, nǐ huíqù gàosu tāmen, Zhōngguó kě hǎowánr le, yǒu chībuwán de měishí! érqiě Zhōngguórén hěn yǒuhǎo, gēn Měiguórén méi shénme chābié. nǐmen kàn de diànyǐng wǒmen yě kàn, nǐmen chī de kuàicān wǒmen yě chī.
Aaron, go back and tell them: China is a lot of fun! There’s an unlimited supply of delicious food! And Chinese people are very friendly. They’re really not much different from Americans. We watch the same movies you watch, and we eat the same fast food.
B: 這就是全球化。所以世界應該這樣看中國。不要用以前的意識形態。當然，中國也不要那樣看世界。
zhè jiùshì quánqiúhuà. suǒyǐ shìjiè yīnggāi zhèyàng kàn Zhōngguó. bù yào yòng yǐqián de yìshíxíngtài. dāngrán, Zhōngguó yě bù yào nàyàng kàn shìjiè.
That’s globalization. So that’s how the world should see China. They shouldn’t use the ideology of the past. Of course, China shouldn’t look at the world that way, either.
A: 不過如果中國真的成了世界第一強國，美國會接受嗎？一山不容二虎啊。
bùguò rúguǒ Zhōngguó zhēnde chéng le shìjiè dì yī qiángguó, Měiguó huì jiēshòu ma? yīshān bùróng èrhǔ a.
But if China really became the most powerful country in the world, could America accept it? Two tigers can’t fit on one mountain, eh?
B: 那它們肯定不是聰明的老虎。
nà tāmen kěndìng bù shì cōngming de lǎohǔ.
Those definitely aren’t smart tigers.
