▎總算, zǒngsuàn, (Adv), finally

 

Function The adverb 總算 refers to the meaning finally, eventually, said with a sigh of relief after a period of anxiety, endurance, etc.,

1 下了兩個星期的雨。今天天氣總算變好了。

Xià le liǎng ge xīngqí de yǔ. Jīntiān tiānqì zǒngsuàn biàn hǎo le.

After two solid weeks of rain, the weather today has finally improved.

2 警察問了半天，都沒有人敢說話。最後總算有人說話了。

Jǐngchá wènle bàn tiān, dōu méi yǒu rén gǎn shuōhuà. Zuìhòu zǒngsuàn yǒu rén shuōhuà le.

The policeman pressed the issue but nobody dared speak out. Eventually somebody spoke up.

3 雖然這次考試也不是考得很好，但總算還可以。

Suīrán zhè cì kǎoshì yě búshì kǎo de hěn hǎo, dàn zǒngsuàn hái kěyǐ.

I may not have done amazingly well on the test, but I did good enough.

4 這次的報告我寫得不好，但總算寫完了。

Zhè cì de bàogào wǒ xiě de bù hǎo, dàn zǒngsuàn xiěwán le.

I didn’t do a great job on this report, but at least it’s done.
